Dr Tomorrow...what kind of enema should I ask for?

Hey all, I'm seeing my GI tomorrow and I'm flaring pretty bad right now. Cramps/bloating (got those under control with tea and digestive enzymes) not much mucus but 4-5 BM's a day mostly loose stool and I'm seeing much more blood than ever. At least a little every time I have a BM and occasionally there is a little pool of it in the toilet. Other than that I don't feel too terrible just VERY tired. I am only taking Asacol right now 3x a day 800 mg.

I don't want steroids so should I just ask for an ati inflammatory enema? Any certain one?

Anything else I should know?

You should start out with a mesalamine enema such as Rowasa or Salofalk (depending on where you live). If after a month or a month an a half on this enema and if it doesn't work, perhaps ask for Cortifoam or Colocort (these are steroid enemas). With steroid enemas, you don't have the same systemic effects as you would with an oral steroid.

I agree with Sherry. You may be able to nip this with Rowasa or a combo of Rowasa and Canasa.

I'm seeing my doctor this week and I have the same question. I have never taken enemas and I have 4-5 BMs a day with blood and soft stool/diarrhea. I'm currently taking Lialda and Azathioprine.

Anyways, what is a good enema to try out? I'm living in the U.S. and I don't have health insurance, so is there a cheap enema I can get my GI to prescribe for me?

I appreciate this thread. Thanks for any suggestions.

Rowasa has a generic form, called Mesalamine rectal suspension. It's cheaper than the brand name.

With bleeding that bad you may need a steriod foam enema for the AM and a 4g Mesalamine enema nightly. At times I would take Cortifoam twice during the day (foam enemas are easy to stay in as you are active) and Mesalamine at night. Slowly cut down on the Cortifoam and then on the Mesalamine as you get better.

Ok well I didn't read the replies until now but that is what he game me. He actually suggested the Cort enema first but I asked for Rowasa. He wrote me a script for both in case the Rowasa doesn't do it.
