Anyone ever have a false negative for C-Diff?

I was on the antibiotic Levaquin just before coming down with my UC. In the very beginning my doc tested for C-Diff to rule that in or out as a possible cause and my test came back negative so UC was the official diagnosis (in conjuction with a blood test for Crohns which also came back negative and a colonoscopy). Now, two years later, I have found out that it is not uncommon for C-Diff tests to come back with false negatives. Now I'm wondering if C-Diff is actually my problem. Does anyone know anything about false negatives on C-Diff tests?

It was some kind of blood test not covered by insurance and I have read that it is not totally reliable. It checks for genetic markers. Supposedly if you have Crohns instead of UC a genetic marker is found. My doctor was leaning toward that I had Crohns but after reviewing all of the tests, including the negative Crohns test, he diagnosed UC. I was astounded to learn that it is somewhat common that C-Diff tests can return false negatives. Seems like if the doctors knew this they wouldn't just so readily accept the results of one test as if it were a sure thing and then possibly treat you for the wrong thing. It makes me wonder how many people out there could be wrongly diagnosed due to a false negative test for C-Diff.

If I remember what I read correctly, there are a few different tests for C-Diff. The main one used by most tests for Toxins A & B in the stool. But, if too much time lapses (I think it was just a short few hours) or there are some kind of lab mistakes, the toxins are already broken down and no longer register on the tests. If you were using 3 samples of the same stool and these events happened, all three tests could give you false negatives.

All my symptoms seemed to fit either c.diff or hantavirus and I have had mice in the garage at new house because there are just too many boxes of clothes etc to move throughout the house as a single dad.

I went and got tested again for c.diff and was shocked it came back negative.

There was a article out this week about how antibiotics 2 in particular including CIPRO cause c.diff infections to flare up. I got UC after taking CIPRO.
