Cortifoam side effects

Anyone have side effects from cortifoam, such as irritition or rectal bleeding?

I like the foam. It is easy to use. Unfortunately for me is hasn't worked well. However I have had no additional irritation or bleeding from it. And it is easier, for me, to hold in versus an enema.

no side effects for me. a little discomfort when it's all in but it subsides in less than a minute.

No. Maybe you need to put some lubricant on the applicator tip before inserting. (Such as K-9 jelly, water soluble.) We did a thread on that some time ago as several members noted a change in the applicator plastic that made it somewhat rougher on the edges. / Old Hat (31 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Nope, never in 21 yrs of using Cortifoam on and off.

The only downside for me with cortifoam is that it is a steroid, and that brings with it potential side effects like adrenal supression, weight gain, etc. Worked wonders for my UC though when I needed it. Very convenient to use, just put it in and you're good to go, unlike watery enemas.

I believe there is a mesalamine foam in Europe that is not available in the U.S. which is a shame.

I have used cortifoam off and on for years and love it, but I have had on occasion had irritation at the rectum.  I find if I lube the tip with vitamin e oil and make sure that the foam is not sitting on the outside on my rear end then Im fine.  Its when the foam from the applicator irritates the rectum from the outside.  I have rubbed vit e oil on that area to help the chaffing and raw feeling.

Other than that its a great med.

There is an extreamly low risk of cortifoam causing the kind of side effects that taking oral pred can cause...it doesn't go into your blood stream like oral pred does, therefore chances of having "pred-like" side effects are slim to zero for the majority of patients.
