I might have to stop 6mp

I seen my GI today and I mentioned that on Thursday I am having an EMG done because I might have foot neuropathy. He wants to know the results when I get them, but he mentioned that he had another patient that developed neuropathy from 6mp.

He doubts it's from the Remicade because I've been having this pain pre-Remi.

I don't know if I'm am going to be relieved to be off 6mp or nervous. Even though I can't metabolize the 6mp correctly, he has been keeping me at a low dose to help prevent me from building antibodies against the Remi. But I really want to be off it because I don't like being on these two meds at once.

i have also found that i have foot neuropathy from 6mp. when i got off of it in march, it went away but now that i'm back on it, it's started again. i probably won't get my script refilled after it's gone anyway since it's not doing anything.

I stopped imuran 2 weeks ago b/c I'm going into a drug trial. I have a 2 week washout period of no meds. I have been on Imuran for almost 7 1/2 years! I was nervous to stop but also anxious to see how I would feel off of it. No changes, good or bad, so far!

     You know Sherry, it may be a good thing if he does take you off the 6MP.  My GI doctor took me off the 6MP two weeks prior to starting Remicade because he said it was too high a risk for other medical problems to be on both.  I was already on prednisone, so with that, the 6MP and Remicade shocked .....much too much!

     I do hope you will be feeling better soon!

I guess I'm just nervous to stop it because knowing how my body reacts I'm afraid that my body is going to reject the Remicade. I'm already pre-medicated before each infusion because I got a serum reaction.

But, I'm counting my chickens before they hatch I guess! I will have to see what the EMG shows.

I know how you feel Sherry. I'd be scared of the same thing but we have to try to think positive, that may happen but it's not probable. I am sure you will do well for a long time.

Good luck with the EMG. Rey had posted recently, as you probably remember, that 6-MP had become an issue for her daughter due to dizzy spells, because gastro did not think that Remicade was causing them. I believe the last she posted the 6-MP dosage had been cut to 25 mg but not eliminated. / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

I'm suppose to start remicade next week and i'm on 125mg 6mp for over 2 years now. My gi said I will take them together but will begin to taper down on 6mp after starting remicade. Does this sound right? I'm flaring right now and started on 30mg prednisone 5 days ago. Before the prednisone I was having moderate symptoms with no blood. Now my symptoms are mild from the prednisone.

     Sherry...I imagine your doctor closely monitors your blood work.  He should be anyway.  How's it been?  Any abnormalities?  My liver enzyme levels were ALWAYS elevated twice the normal limits on 6MP.  My doctor didn't seem concerned with this.  BUT...maybe that is why he took me off it before starting Remicade.  I also think there was an issue with my white cell count being a bit too low, but honestly cannot remember much about it.  What is your dose of 6MP?

Old Hat, my problem with the 6mp is that I can't metabolize it, meaning that hardly any is getting into my system and I won't get much benefit from it if I decrease my dose down since I'm already at the second lowest dose (50mg). I am at the dose that gives me marginal benefit.

So in saying that, perhaps it's not doing much good at ALL? lol

CL, yeah, that sounds about right. You don't want to be on a too high dose of 6mp and Remi together. It can cause complications. What dose are you going to end up on? Before the Remi, I was on 100mg's Mon and Wed, and 50mgs the rest of the days. My doc tried me at 75mg every day but my body couldn't keep up and my liver was becoming toxic which is why he did the strange dosing. Now I'm down to 50mgs every night. Good luck on the Remi :) I hope it helps you like it has helped me.

Christine, I think we were typing at the same time! lol Yes, my doc keeps a very close eye on my blood work. No abnormalities and all my counts are fine.

Sherry I'm sorry you're going through this. I'm pro Remi so I hope it works for you well. My GI injected me cortisone before the infusion. Have you tried that? May be worth mentioning.

Did you get the job btw?

Oh the Remi has been a god send for me! I have been in remission now 7 months or so (after years of "simmering"). I'm just afraid that without the 6mp that my body is going to reject it. I pre-med before each infusion with Benedryl and Solumedrol (steroid injected into my IV).

No I didn't get the job :( But! I'm still on the look out! lol

What about you switching to methotrexate possibly?

Too bad about not getting the job...Hope you find the perfect one soon!

Hey Sherry -- I was on Imuran with the Remi, and my doc decided to take me off of the Imuran. I was a little anxious about the change as well, but everything turned out fine. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you will have the same result.
