Steroid enemas & Cancer

I met with my surgeon today. My surgery is set for Nov. 8th. They found cancer so I have to remove the entire colon. I did a CT and they also see that my lymph(?) is inflamed as well - they don't know whether that's cancer or not.

So I've just been having bloody watery D - I go about 7 times a day now, but it seems to be very active during the night. My surgeon prescribed me steroid enemas called Predonema 60ml. What I'm concerned about is .... because UCers cancers tend to spread quicker than "normal" people, I'm worried that my cancer will be more active by using steroid enemas versus using regular enemas like pentasa. I asked my surgeon but he didn't really respond to that question.

This Predomema seems to be made from the steroid Prednisolone.

It's really a question for the oncologist, not the surgeon. I don't know why a steroid would make a cancer worse, frankly, but I'm not a doc.

Why is one kind of liquid supposed to spread the cancer faster than another?

I guess I'm just paranoid...steroids are hormones so it made me just made me wonder.

because steroids, particularly prednisone, encourage the cancer cell growth.

Yes, Penny, in your shoes I would either ask the surgeon again or ask the medical oncologist. But there's every likelihood that given the fact that your surgery is coming up quickly the steroids won't have any real impact between now and then.

I'll send lots of positive energy for a successful surgery and clear lymph nodes. xxoo

I believe you have the right cause to be concerned. Any immune altering drug and cancer should be addressed. I agree with janey and I also am wishing the best for you and your health and happiness !

Thank you ....helps just to get it off my chest. I guess using the enemas would be better than just having blood coming out 24/7. Thanks :)

I started using the enemas from last night. Just wondering if it takes time for it to start kicking in similar to the oral steroids? When I used it last night, I still had a BM during the night but it was D and only a small amount of blood - not like before where there was tons of blood.
