Flu shot and symptoms

This may be a dumb question but here we go anyway...:)   Has anybody ever had their UC flare get more aggravated after getting the flu shot?   I’ve gotten the flu shot almost every year for awhile now, but I’ve never been in a flare while getting it before.   This is the first time I’ve gotten while being in a UC flare.   I was feeling great Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, got the shot Tuesday afternoon, and starting Tuesday night started having an upset stomach, a lot more gas and some serious rumblings in my colon.   I had some cold-like symptoms Tuesday night which are rare but apparently can happen if you are taking Prednisone when you get the shot.   Those went away by the next day but I can’t shake the stomach and colon upset. Just curious if anybody ever had a similar experience or if its just an unfortunate coincidence!   I’m going to Spain in 3 days so I’d really like it if I could get back to how I was on Monday, which was feeling pretty good!

I've never had an issue with the flu shot before either. Ugh I hope my UC symptoms aren't mysteriously coming back even after I've been eating bland this week.  I started Prilosec over the weekend and right after that was when I started feeling great, until I got the shot anyway! No change in diet either this week. In face I ate WAY worse over the weekend and felt great!

I don't know, but I've read a lot on the flu shot and spoken with many doctors and naturopaths. I do not get any more flu shots. Hope u feel better.

I had a mild short fever a day after I think. It does get your immune system to spark up a bit because it thinks there is an infection - which is how the vaccine works. It sees the infection and builds up antibiodies to attack it. These antibodies stay in your system and you body will remember how to attack the flu if you get it for real. The flu vaccine though is a dead inactive version, your immune system attacks it just the same, but whatever the immune system does it does it usually without anyone noticing.

I didn't notice any difference with my colitis though. I'm in a flare.

I would do your own homework on flu shots and how beneficial they actually are. I do know that there is a timeframe when getting one, that you may have side effects.

If you are pregnant or have an infant and want to get a flu shot, just to be on the safe side, you must specifically insist on getting the thimerosal-free single vial version. Otherwise you might get the vaccine that contains mercury.

I will never get a flu shot. This doctor believes that the mercury and aluminum in vaccines increases the risk of Alzheimer's disease. FWIW since monitoring my blood levels of Vitamin D in the optimum range I had maybe one cold in the past 5 years.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "The following substances are found in flu vaccines: aluminum, antibiotics, egg protein, formaldehyde, human aborted fetal apparatus (dead human tissue), monosodium glutamate (MSG), and thimerosol (mercury)."

The flu shot last year caused me to have a few bad days of increased symptoms of colitis but passed. I decided not to get a shot this year.

It seems a bit like Russian Roulette to inject something that affects your immune system when your immune system isn't working right. Besides, if you do your homework, they are trying to get enough people injected to protect the ones it doesn't work (well) in. If only (and I know I live in dreamland) they would put that money and effort into making strong healthy people.

Thimerosol is mercury by the way. The amount injected in the shot is more than the FDA's recommended weekly dosage. I feel like the pharmacies and stores like WalMart that urge these shots also need to make it clear that if you have any allergies to the ingredients, as well as chicken or egg protein, a flu shot may not be for you.

I get mine at work (they have a day where nurses come in and give them out for free) and I know they have a notice that states if you are allergic to eggs do not get the shot.  I've also seen notices that state the shot has no eggs in it, so I believe they have both kinds.

I've never really been the type of person to believe that vaccinations are bad for you or are in some way going to harm you.  I ended up feeling back to normal a few days after the shot.  Like somebody else said anything that jars your immune system a little bit could upset any sort of autoimmune illness. I had a cold last week and my symptoms got worse then too.  But they are getting  back to normal now.  I've been getting the Hepatitis series of shots and those dont seem to affect me at all though.

I get the shots just in case I need to go back on immunosuppressants as I was on Imuran and had to get off of it. Dr's always recommend getting the shots if you are on any of those drugs.

 

I've had the flu shot every year for the past few years. My employer also offers it for free, during work. I've never had any side effect of any kind from it.

I did have a bad case of the flu before I started getting the annual shots, and I'll be happy if I never have to deal with that again. I know the flu shot isn't guaranteed to be 100% effective (because they are guessing at what flu strains will be circulating each year), but I'm ok with that.
