Tailbone pain

Anyone else have periodic tailbone pain as a side effect of their UC?

Was struggling with a flare but snapped out of it last spring while using rectal enemas nightly.  Started noticing shortly afterwards periodic tailbone pain off and on but in the last month its been pretty much a daily occurance.   Doesn't really kick in until the evening after I get home - and yes, I have a job where I sit on my butt all day.

Had an x-ray and the results came back normal.  Going back and forth between heat and ice but not really finding anything to help. 

Any thoughts are appreciated! 

And no, no falls/accidents to really attribute to the start of the pain back in the spring.  Only other thing I'd say is my GI doc did to a colonscopy - maybe he was a little too rough down there??

I started having tailbone pain last week.(I have a chronic back problem though) I really notice it when I sit on the floor with my sweet grandbaby. I also started getting pain in the kneecap( I broke it 5yrs ago) on the same day. I was surmising that the bad bacteria could be making their way to my susceptible joints of my body and gonna start up some nasty arthritis.

The tailbone pain (and your kneecap pain, Lodi) is a symptom of active inflammation in the gut. You need to treat that inflammation to get rid of the joint pain. It's not bacteria that is travelling to your joints - it is your immune system being overly active and getting a little crazy in extraintestinal areas.

I have found that if I get a cold or other mild viral illness, I'll get bowel issues and joint pain to go along with the immune system activities due to the cold. At least I know that will pass as soon as the cold goes away.

Persistant joint pain associated with IBD can be treated - I use sulfazine as one of my meds and it treats both my colon and my joints. I also adopted a gluten-free diet, which helped a lot.

One last thing, cpaarchie, it may be worthwhile to have an ergonomic study done of your workstation. Posture and position are really important if you have a desk job.

I ditto what Kasabern said ... I had tailbone pain but was in "remission" from my UC ... well, I discovered that I developed proctitis! Once I started treatment for that (enemas) then the tailbone pain went away. It is definitely inflammation. I also take Sulfasalazine and it has been great in combating the joint pain.

any chance it's a pilonidal cyst? i had one years ago and it hurt a lot. Caused me to have bad lower back posture (I tried to relief the pressure on it by sitting crooked)

I was fine in other positions but not sitting.
If it is that, if can get infected and be quite nasty.

It can typically look like a bit of a pimple at first but mine didn't. it there is any redness or swelling or tenderness just around the top end of the buttcrack.

No idea if it would show in any scanning type images, Doc might be able to identify if they have a look? mine, as I say, wasn't very obvious - had it for a long time - months I think (was about 25 years ago so don't recall details) - i do recall when it finally got infected and went from being just a pressure to a real pain in the "...." - swelled up from the size of a pea to the size of a grapefruit almost overnight!

Looking back, the pain initially started back when I was struggling to recover from a flare and when I had inflammation in the rectum.  Was having fairly normal BM's (1-3 a day) but was having blood when I wiped so I did an aggressive treatment of rectal enemas (mesalamine) every day for a few weeks and that cleared up the blood altogether, although the tailbone pain lingered.  

For the longest time it never hurt during the day but would act up in the evening after I got home from work so I attributed it to sitting but maybe this is a combination of that as well as lingering inflammation from the UC?

I am now sitting on a U shaped pillow although this doesn't seem to be helping as well as taking tylenol and using ice.  Not sure what else to do other than go back to my doc.... does this seem like an appropriate thing to go back to the GI doc for?

I had a pilonidal cyst. It was in my butt crack. I thought it was a bed sore. It was like a hole but I could heal up and you could not even tell anything was there. I had to have it removed surgical. The they missed part of it and had to do the surgery again. It took forever to heal. Because of where it was I could not sit for a couple of months. Mine would bleed into the toilet and that is how I found out I had it. It took months before I had anyone look at it because I was embarrassed and thought it was a bed sore and I had been spending too much time in bed.
