Hi, I just recently graduated from college a few months ago, and when me and my friends from college get back together we like to do all the stuff we did in college (drinking). I've been on Imuran since August and I've gotten pretty drunk twice since then, both times I had no issues... until the next day. The next day I was very nauseous both times and I believe I ended up throwing up on both of those days. I'm going out for a friend's birthday tomorrow night and I'd like to avoid the same things happening again. Now I'm not sure if this is the Imuran that is causing this, but I never had any issues with drinking while I was on Humira. Also I don't seem to have any issues when I only drink a little bit. I have no problem doing this, but I was just wondering if anyone who has been on Imuran has any insight on any of this?
I'd like to be able to enjoy the night with my friends without worrying about
being nauseous the entire next day. Any experience or insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

You really shouldn't binge drink while on this but I understand the need to get out there and feel "normal". I highly suggest you limit your alcohol intake though. It's very damaging on the liver, especially while on Imuran. But after drinking, be sure to drink lots and lots of water and eat a slice of bread before going to bed. The water will help rehydrate you and the bread will soak up any alcohol in your stomach.

I asked my GI doc about
alcohol while on Imuran and he said "there are no restrictions with alcohol" I also looked online and found nothing limiting alcohol use while taking Imuran.
A bit confused about
this issue.

That is confusing because Imuran can adversely effect the liver so adding additional stress on top of that shouldn't be good. Maybe if you have been getting your liver enzymes checked and they come back normal then maybe Imuran is OK with alcohol. Most people know that Tylenol can adversely effect the liver and there are several who have actually died by mixing even small amounts of alcohol when there is too much Tylenol in the system. They have even recently lowered the high dose standards of Tylenol due to too many problems with accidental overdoses of Tylenol. Are your liver enzymes ever elevated at all? I say if they are not totally normal then you should refrain from too much alcohol and if they ever get in the high range you should probably eliminate alcohol totally. It looks to me like your body is trying to tell you something and it might be wise to listen. Alcohol doesn't usually mix with UC anyway. Easy for me to say since I came down with UC long after my party days were over.

Moderate occasional drinking usually doesn't produce any harmful affects of mixing alcohol and Imuran/6mp. It's the binge drinking you have to be careful of.

of course common sense is the most difficult thing to wrap one's head around.
your body seems to not to handle it well...just like mine doesn't handle a lot of oil or fragrance. Both make me nauseatingly sick and I suffer for it.
You can adjust your intake....and still look "cool".

I've been getting regular bloodwork done and my liver enzymes are fine while my Vitamin D is slightly low. Gonna give it a go tonight and see how I'm feeling tomorrow. Thanks for the feedback everybody, I appreciate it.

My enzymes have been checked, but not recently, from what I've been told, if the imuran is going to go south on you, it happens within the first 6 months.
Also, I think most tests while on Imuran are looking for high white blood cell counts because of the lymphoma issue (1% chance).
I believe liver tests have to be specifically asked for, but always a good idea when you are multiple meds.
To tell you the truth, keeping my red blood cell count high is my biggest challenge and with it, the energy level. We all have sleep issues to deal with on top of everything else.
This stuff aint easy, but it's much better than the alternative.

Would "cleaner" spirits pose less of a problem? For example, mixed drinks that use Vodka or Gin versus drinking beer and wine?

I know how youre feeling mate havent drank in over a month. A b-day is coming up in a few weeks if Im a bit more recovered ill be having a few drinks. Cleaner spirits would pose less of a problem. They seem to have less effects on the liver. I have no medical backing on that except from Russian doctors. Vodka only! And not the cheap stuff as its riddled with weird and improper chemicals.
Im not saying you can go all out, drinking too heavily causes nausea and throwing up Imuran or not! :). With our UC getting really drunk is never a good idea. Im also a fan of the double stress on the liver theory from Imuran and alcohol. We should be only having minor drinks and when not on flares. Everyone us different though.
It is not easy to explain why you arent drinking at a party to new people or unclose ones. The easy way out? Use the I'm on antibiotics and I cant drink excuse :p.

Dinky, vodka is better on both the gut and liver but alcohol is alcohol. It still goes thru the liver.

It says not to drink alcohol on my 6mp bottle. I drink but usually just a glass of wine or a cocktail.

I have a friend with UC who happens to be a pharmacist. He is drug-free by eliminating gluten....he only drinks Grey Goose Vodka.

Grey Goose is distilled from wheat and Smirnoff from corn - Ciroc from grapes. You might want to let your friend know.

Vodka does not contain gluten unless added after distillation.

Perhaps its just because your getting older, maybe your body can't tolerate the binge drinking like it did in collage.

An update for anyone wondering, everything went fine. Drank mostly Vodka and Rum, but I did have a beer or two at one point. I didn't feel too poorly the next day at all and especially not like the two times right after I started the Imuran.
