On Pred...and did something really stupid today!

Hi All,

This is mostly directed to the ladies as a cautionary tale.

I started pred (40mg) 2 days ago in an effort to get this horrible flare under control (at least somewhat) before I travel to Florida next week with my daughter for a field hockey tournament. Anyway, today I decided to get a pedicure for my trip...a nice treat (my hubbie gave me a gift certificate for my bday last month).

It was very relaxing, and I was feeling good. My manicurist suggested a lip wax, since I hadn't had one in a while. I said "fine"...BIG MISTAKE!!! I am totally burned from it. I didn't put it together right away, but what a stupid thing to do while on pred. I know that you are photosensitive while on pred ( I plan on wearing a hat and heavy sunscreen while in Florida. I'm fair and hate the sun anyway), but I didn't think about waxing. Thanks God it's a small area. I just put some aloe vera on and it has helped a lot. Just be careful...no waxing while on prednisone. I also read that you're not supposed to take antacids too closely to your pred dosage. Who knew?

On the bright side, the pred has made me a manic housekeeper...I have been washing walls, baseboards, cabinets, etc in a cleaning frenzy. It's a little scary, but at least my house looks better.

Pred causes photosensitivity? New one for me. Never happened. Although that cleaning/doing work insanity I get too :)

Hope you still have a blast in Florida though!

Yeah, it affects your bones, eyes and skin, I know it.  Azathoiprine is even harder on your skin.

Oh geesh! Thanks for sharing this! I used to use the tanning bed all the time, being from Los Angeles and all, but now... I need to stay away if I get back on Predisone. Which I pray to god I don't have to again.

I felt the eyes and bones part. :(. Skin would be the acne part which will begin later in my taper

I have a nice itchy rash around my nose thanks to my taper. Each time I drop it crops up then diminishes as my body gets use to the new dose. Once it is almost gone, I drop again only to have it come back. Hopefully it will completely go away after I am off the darn drug.

Btw...don't you just love that "I've got it all going on" feeling 40 mg gives you! You accomplish so much!

@Madpotter,

I see you're on 6mp. How's that going?? My next step may be Imuran. When the doc first suggested it 6 months ago, I was completely against it. Now, as this flare continues (and I'm even expelling blood when I cough), I am more amenable to the idea. My quality of life is really suffering. I stay home most mornings...and have been missing some of my kids' events.

I've only been on the prednisone for 3 days, and it's not working as fast as it did last time. I know I have to give it more time. I think the mental part is the worst. I used to be a very upbeat and spontaneous person. I've lost that.

Just praying that my skin isn't permanently scarred. I'll call my dermatologist later today....I can't believe how stupid I was....oh well, at least this post may help others :)

Yes, the mad cleaning was the only positive when I was on prednisone. I was hyper/manic and got by on only 2-3 hours of sleep a night with no ill effects.
