independent movement of the digestive tract..meaning that the body doesn't control it.
It's a series of smooth muscle contractions/movements from the esophagus to the anus...basically to move foodstuff through the digestive tract.
When we flare, eat something wonky, feel nauseated, something's awry and the peristalsis can quicken or throw hissy fits causing spasming, etc.
Some meds to help with nausea will help quicken stuff through the digestive tract...some will cross the blood/brain barrier and calm the nausea centre...some will calm the smooth muscle contractions.
But vomitting goes against the normal flow of peristalsis...sometimes helping remove the offending food/invader, but having the stomach/guts in a hissy fit state.
Sometimes for me, even noise or smells can cause my nausea to be worse...anything that can calm the digestive tract helps...
