Going in for Pre-op paperwork and consulation before surgery..do i stop humira?

It might vary by surgeon, but my surgeon wanted me off drugs like Humira and Remicade for 6 weeks before surgery. Can you call the surgeon's office and ask?

Also, you aren't on steroids, are you?

     I had my surgery June 28,2010 and my surgeon requested I be off the Humira at least six weeks prior to surgery.  However, I could not get off the prednisone without flaring miserably, so, he instructed me to continue with the prednisone.  I believe I could only get down to 20  mgm at the time of my operation.  After my operation, I tapered 5 mgm per week and was able to be off the prednisone completely by that August. 

It's up to your surgeon and I suppose just like everything else, they all have different criteria. I was on Remicade prior to my surgery and I was off of it for 3 months before my surgery. Best of luck with everything.

I consulted with Mayo, and from their own experience and culling other surgery centers data, they have concluded that recent use of biologic drugs dictates a 3 rather than 2 step surgery in order to vastly reduce the likelihood of sepsis (which would jeapeordize pouch success and can be life threatening for that matter), whereas Imuran, 6MP, and even high dose prednisone did not provide any advatnage or reason for 3 step surgery. 1 step is virtually never done for IBD and you should probably run not walk away from any doc that suggests it.
