After ER visit with abnormal blood values- next day or two days later.
After hospital admission visit where GI or her associates had treated me - two weeks
Horrible horrible symptoms - had same day (ended up being admitted to hospital) or a couple of days
Change in medication at a visit - follow-up in 2-3 weeks.
I've been so symptomatic since diagnosed, that there hasn't really been a long period of time when I didn't see my GI or talk with the office.
I've also had short notice colonoscopies/ sigmoidoscopies (two weeks). For the most part, it is my GI making the timing decisions and she indicates them on my check out sheet. There were three exceptions - 1) I was really really symptomatic and they ended up having a same day opening. I was admitted to the hospital that same day. 2) I had gone to the ER and had abnormal liver/pancreas values. I told the receptionist and they got me in quickly. 3) I was basically deciding to schedule surgery and they got me in ASAP to go over any last minute questions I had in person.
I know they have different types of time slots. Standard scheduling slots. Somewhat urgent slots. And super urgent slots (my words, not theirs). I heard them talking about the different timeslots before. This is a huge practice with many doctors. They have schedulers with access to certain timeslots. Then the doctors have nurses with access to shorter notice/critical timeslots.
I've also made many many calls to the nurse to talk about symptoms, medications, indicate medication preferences/decisions, etc. I've always had same day or next day call backs (sometimes with alot of questions asked to the Dr.) I think there have been times when I've talked to them two/three times in a day. As I mentioned, I was a really bad case. I might have gotten lucky with my GI and their office.
