I don't need my doctor to have UC, just have empathy for those that do. In fact I can see a downside to a doctor having IBD because if their UC responded to a particular drug they might assume everyone's should be the same. I think we've all seen here that people are not the same, what works for one person doesn't work for others.
The perfect doctor? One with a good medical background in IBD who keeps up with the latest research, who has 10 years of experience with UC and all other forms of IBD and IBS. They've seen it all and know there is not "one answer". This perfect doctor would be a good listener and have an excellent office staff who returned calls promptly.
edit to add: after reading It'sAlwaysSomethings post: yes, the perfect doctor would suggest alternative methods such as diet modification, fecal bacteriopathy and other options when drugs with low side effects have no impact. But I know this is far-fetched because doctors are terrified of malpractice. Because the AMA doesn't support these therapies doctors who do suggest them
open themselves up to malpractice. For this reason I have little respect for the AMA.
