How much meslamine is too much?

How much Meslamine is too much? My dr prescribed me to take 8.8 grams a day. That's 1.2 grams per Lialda tablet X 4 per day = 4.8 grams orally. I am taking one generic Rowasa enema which is another 4 grams rectally.

I ask because I'm thinking of doubling the Rowasa for the next week to combat this flare but haven't decided for sure yet. According to http://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/

sfROWASA OVERDOSAGE: There have been no documented reports of serious toxicity in man resulting from massive overdosing with mesalamine. Under ordinary circumstances, mesalamine absorption from the colon is limited. (Link)

Appears to be just topical in the rectum/sigmoid and not absorbed into the bloodstream and liver (where it would do damage). It said about a 22% absorption rate for other oral meslamines.

Your thoughts? Am I crazy?

I was on 4.8 g of oral mesalamine (Asacol) plus a nightly 4 g enema for a long time and did fine.

I also think it'd be fine to add in another 4 g enema. Like you said, it's basically topical, and absorption is pretty minimal.

I also know that songlady (a used-to-be-active member) takes 16 Asacol a day, so that's 6.4g, I'm pretty sure she uses rectal mesalamine as needed.

But I'd clear it with your doc, first.
