I am in the middle of a flare up.....down to 30 mg. of pred a day with cortifoam and salofalk supp. I cannot tolerate oral Mezavant.
My Iron is very low and am taking suppliments but am eating eggs as I love them and they give me so many nutrients. However, I hard boiled some eggs and I swear they are making the already excruciating gas pains worse. Has anyone else experienced this. Also, I must say I am very slowly improving but not nearly as quickly as I thought. Is it possible for the blood and gas to last into the 4th week even on pred.? Thanks for any help. This site is my lifeline.

Eggs give me really bad gas and stomach pain. I stopped eating them and it kind of sucks because breakfast is boring without eggs. You're still on 30mg of prednisone so don't count it out yet. I would call your GI if you don't see any improvements and you're down to 20mg.

Thanks Don'tScopeMe. haha I love the name.
I really thought the pred would start stop all bleeding and urgency within the first week. My first time with this kind of flare up. Is the gas from the colitis or the prednisone?

I didn't have any increased gas when I was on prednisone. I only really felt bad gas after starting oral mesalamine. Prednisone can stop UC symptoms for some people the same day it's taken. I didn't have success with my prednisone taper, the doctor gave me it at a time when I didn't really need it and the taper was too quick. I'm sure someone on this forum with more experience with prednisone can help you out.

If hard boiled eggs are giving you gas, try a different way of cooking them. Hard boiled eggs don't give me gas, but I find them a tad indigestible. When I'm ill (ie not on Pred), I switch to poached eggs and soft-boiled eggs only.
Might help :-/

I will try that, thanks NiceCupOfTea. The poached eggs didn't seem to bother me. I love eggs and even with a supplement my gastro wants me to get as much iron and b vitamins as possible. My hemoglobin is way down.

I've been in a terrible flare for about
6 weeks now and have been eating an egg, or an egg plus one egg white a few times a week with my breakfast. I've had them scrambled, over easy and in a sort of omlette with no trouble at all. I've also thought poached would be good too. Maybe you can get some iron by eating a little bit of steak, or something with some lower fat ground beef if you can tolerate that? As for the pred, I have been on a dose varying between 40 and 60 mg/day for a little over a month now and it has not helped me at all, so at least you feel like you are getting something from it and maybe more improvement yet to come. Feel better soon!

I can't take the Mezavant oral. I had even more bleeding, chills and fainted. Yet, I was on the salofalk supp. for years which are the same thing. I can't stand the prednisone at 40. I am hoping a combo of low pred, cortifoam and salofalk suppositories work. It was always lower colitis. This is all so new and terrible!!

as for pred, i never noticed improvement on it so i'm not sure how long it takes.
