Anyone else's GI start getting irritated with you for not responding to meds?

My current GI is clearly getting fed up with me because I do not tolerate the progression of IBD meds they try. They should in an ideal world start thinking outside the box, but they dont- or I have simply had rotten luck with lousy GI's. i have an alternative MD too but he's a bit useless too other than being happy to rx or monitor any alternative therapy I'd like to try, which has been helpful if ultimately unsuccessful.

The only time my doc gets angry is if he thinks I am not complying with his instructions.

Yes we have had this. At one point our GI asked why we stopped Chinese medicine (it wasn't working) and maybe we should retry herbal enemas (!) She's generally very anti alternatives. She now knocks on wood (literally) when things are more stable (no thanks to her) and last appointment (lasted 10mins max) she refused to order blood work (though it had been4 months ) because she thought everything was "great" (clinically). I'm annoyed but what can I do? I'm tired of second guessing this woman all of the time and dealing with her moodiness. She knows she doesn't have anything else to offer and yet doesn't approve of surgery (not sick enough blah blah).

I think it's normal for the GI to get irritated that stuff that works for others, doesn't work for you.

I get pissed also.

Mine doesn't really get fed up. She looks puzzled and doesn't know what to do.

I am doing well on remicade (for the most part) in terms of colitis symptoms, but when I went to see a GI to discuss the side effects , he got so mad and started shouting at me . Luckily he is not my usual GI, I just went to see him because my regular GI was on maternity leave.

my GI has piss poor bedside manner but i do know one thing, he genuinely wants to see me get better and we both felt great when i was finally showing signs of remission. granted i'm sick again and we're both discouraged now...

i think he does get upset when i do my own research and present him with options he is not well read/informed on. but as long as I justify things, he usually gets on board. yesterday when i told him about glutamaine, slippery elm extract and that fact that I started "juicing" he was clearly irritated though, basically thinks I am trying too much too soon. still planning on trying the glutamine and slippery elm though, i figure it can only help at this point

Docs should not get frustrated with you for not responding to treatment. They should strive to find a way to treat you that works.

The problem is, modern medicine is not set up to think outside of the box.

IMO, there are a lot of doctors who are arrogant, egotistical SOBs and get annoyed with patients who don't respond to their recommendations or have the gall to either question recommendations or suggest alternatives.

Of all the medical people I've seen during my lifetime, only a handful stand out as respectful, caring individuals whom I would trust to put my welfare ahead of their egos.

I don't think it's age-related. I do think it has a lot to do with going into and staying in medicine for the right reasons.

30 years ago, when there were conflicting test results after a mammogram, an (older) very well-respected oncologist asked me if I "thought" I was sick. (What did I feel in my gut?) I said "I'm not sick" and....it turned out to be true.
The memory of that experience gave me the strength to refuse a colectomy last year.

It is true however that the younger people I've encountered are generally open-minded about alternative meds.

I agree with IAS.

Frankly, I haven't been to any regular docs (vs. holistic) who are open to anything but Big Pharma, and boy do they like to push those drugs.

It's the way they are schooled - "my way or the highway" attitude to go with it.

Pro: You may remember my sons story,his first GI put him in the hospital,for colon rescue after oral and rectal meds failed,he was on IV solumedrol and cyclosporin. Well both meds failed
and he sent him home to die. After I watched this for 3 days of crapping blood about 35 times a day,and sleeping by the toilet,down to about 125 pounds I called the son of a B****
and got names of docs down at the big hospitals in center city. Anyhow long story short,colectomy or die.

I agree with IAS - I have generations of MDs in my family. My grandfather was an MD who worked in the Indian public system - not the best move if money and status are your motivations. He worked for years in prisons, taught free classes in local villages on contraception, cared about diet and advised his patients about it, was constantly learning and was incredibly humble, made little money, did house calls in the middle of the night, was paid in installments, with food and favours etc. People still talk about him where he was from and he passed away twenty years ago.
My sister in law is currently in medical school - the "best" and most difficult to get into apparently. She and her classmates base their future specialization on potential earnings, "returns on their investments", talk about patients as if they're absolute idiots, and really they are not the brightest of the bright. My husband and I were shocked when she was admitted but even more shocked having an insight into what they learn and what they are think (of the rest of us). Clearly, they select for a particular type of person - tests, references, essays, interviews etc. Shudder. If you think it's bad now, I fear what it will be like in the future - the only hope is that patients are leading research and treatment in many fields and they have to respond to people who are more informed than ever. Which brings me back to your question - this makes them very angry.

Well it is not just the doctor's fault the go for the most earnings. do you know how expensive med school is. I am getting my counseling degree and I have over 100,000 in school loans. But I do agree this is no excuse not to care. They have our lives in their hands. It should t frustrate them that we have access to information about our health on the Internet.

My doctor does get frustrated with my body. We have tried so much. He will make it clear though that he is not frustrated with me. He says he is frustrated with himself for not knowing what to do to make me feel better. He says he is doing everything by the book and it should work but it isn't. It has made me feel like he was going to tell me he would quit being my doctor before. I asked him and he was like no I would never do that. As long as you willing to stick with me, you are one of my best patients, I'm sticking with you.

Yeah, I don't see my GI doctor anymore. He doesn't approve of the path I took. The one time he was trying to force me to stay on 6mp and yelling at me. That's when I knew he totally lost it, when your doctor starts yelling he isn't really going by facts, he is just angry you won't listen. Then when I got my last colonoscopy and I turned out I was doing much better, I was really tempted to just rub it in face.

Teddlove, I know how expensive it is but that unfortunately that attracts people who can access funds to pay for it and who want returns on the other side. I know many many med school students/ MDs (being Indian everyone and their uncle wants to be a dr and many of them will do anything - go to med school in Jamaica, crappy third rate US schools etc to achieve that. These people are not driven by the greater good or advancing medicine as a whole). I can count 20 or more MDs and dentist acquaintances (children of my parents' friends). I wouldn't let my child get within a mile of them.
I'm surprised your Dr says "it should work but it doesn't" since most of the drugs on the market have a pretty low rate of maintaining remission, meaning if he treats IBD then he's seen many people be failed by the meds. I know our GI has had many patients go through colectomy - she's considered one of the best, so her frustration/anger confuses me. I think she doesn't trust that we're doing what she has told us to do when we always have. She's also annoyed by patients/parents asking questions about treatment. That's a whole other issue though.

Killcolitis I agree tons of people that should not be doctors are attracted to the position. In past time people reall cared about the patients. Personally I want to be a counselor because I had a really rough childhood. I have known my whole like that I wanted to be a counselor. Want to help people. I want to change lives. I have a passion for sharing my wealth of knowledge to help people in the darkest times. I think more doctors should feel like me. But a lot of my feeling stem from all my problems. My problems make mew more compassionate.

I thnk maybe I misstated my doctors words maybe he said something should work not it should work but doesn't. It would be awful for a doctor to not believe you were being compliant. I understand why that would frustrate you.

I did experience the doctor getting annoyed by asking about other treatments. When I was first diagnosed I went to a CCFA conference and was told that taking psyllium is good for UC. He actually said tome that is the problem with going to those conferences, they give bad information. People with UC should not take fiber.

My husband has been following the doctors orders to the T and his doctor did get ill with him this flare up and thought my husband was not following instructions just because my husband made the statement that he had been "treating himself at home" Which he was meaning diet wise not going against medical advice and treatment. Im sure they get frustrated but they should never be rude!!
