Calcium and vitamin D have been proven to help prevent further bone loss, but do not cause new calcium to deposit to re-build bone. The bone-building drugs have been shown to do so, but have now also been found to have some serious side-effects (seems they re-build bone in certain areas while causing bone loss in others.)
Dexascan does not measure anything in the area of the knee or other areas of the leg. I had a dexascan three months before suffering a pathological fracture of my tibia and fibula due to osteoporosis. Have you had straight x-rays of your knees? An MRI? You could have bone loss or avascular necrosis in your knees that a dexascan would never hit at.
With your history of Prednisone use, I'd certainly see an orthopedist to get this checked out. I did, and I'm really glad.
