There has also been a decade-long stagnation in the diversity of GM crops. As in the mid to late 1990s, only four crops – soya, maize, cotton and canola – comprise virtually 100% of biotech agriculture, as even ISAAA is forced to concede. Biotech versions of rice, wheat, tomatoes, sweet corn, potatoes and popcorn have been soundly rejected as unacceptable in the world marketplace (Center for Food Safety, August 2006). The initial approval of GM alfalfa in the U.S. was reversed in 2006 by a federal judge, who castigated the US Dept of Agriculture (USDA) for failing to conduct a serious assessment of its environmental impacts.

Perhaps most surprising is the stagnation of GM traits. Despite more than a decade of hype and failed promises, the biotechnology industry has not introduced a single GM crop with increased yield, enhanced nutrition, drought-tolerance or salt-tolerance. Disease-tolerant GM crops are practically nonexistent. In fact, biotech companies have made a commercial success of GM crops with just two traits – herbicide tolerance
and insect resistance –which offer no advantages to consumers or the environment. In fact, GM crops in the world today are best characterized by the overwhelming penetration of just one trait – herbicide tolerance – which is found in over 80% of all GM crops planted worldwide, and which as we explore further below is associated with increased use of chemical pesticides.

Good read Mark, there is a lot of controversy on the subject.

Possibly the biggest study done recently on rats, concluded that GMOs are unsafe, untested and whether the biotech eng. companies think GMOs would stop would reduce world hunger or impact our environment in some positive way is negligible. Yet this amazing study is being dismissed by the FDA and Monsanto.

So many other things are going on right now... For example, PIs are trespassing farmlands and taking samples of GM planted crops, and then suing farmers for planting saved seeds that are patented by Monsanto, taking these farmers to court! So even the people that support Monsanto in some small way are being targeted.

Those of us concerned about GMOs are just asking for our God given right, to know what we are ingesting. We should be able to make an informed decision about what we put into our bodies!

Mexican corn (which has banned Monsanto from interfering) has already tested their corn, positive for trasgenic DNA, which means cross-contamination. Plainly put, if Monsanto destroys local farming, Mexico among other countries will be dependent on multi-nationals, having to buy Monsanto fertilizers or herbicides, because without it their industrial(Monsanto) corn will not grow.

I get really fired up, sorry, but its pretty serious! None of us really KNOW if GM foods have impacted us in some negative way... how could you?

If Monsanto is so proud of their GMOs, why don't they slap a label on them?

And yeah - Around here (Ontario, Canada) I recall a farmer telling me there is a law that prevents them (the organic farmers) from suing Monsanto when and if their fields become cross pollinated by GM crops and they loose their organic certification because it shows up in the lab test - So the organic farmers cannot sue Monsanto for lost revenues as now they have to sell their organic crop at a lower price or something like that... Not sure if its true. Just what the local Organic Farmer mentioned during a conversation.

It's a pretty gruesome 2 year study, yes but truthful. If you check out the last 3 minutes of the Youtube Monsanto documentary, you'll see how it effects Paraguayan people whose farming methods are completely handled by Monsanto. :(

Which begs me to question, is GMO labeling enough? Is this all we can do to bring awareness among the public? Whom will then make an informed decision about whether to support Monsanto or not. I mean, even Whole Foods announcing their GMO labeling for all shelved products in 5 years is good news, but darn 5 years is a long time, who knows whats at stake by then.

Yes, that's what i'm referring to -about the organic farmers and cross-polination of their crops with GM patent seeds.
