6MP

Hello All,

So I was recently lucky enough to have a 2 month remission after about a 10 month flare. Unfortunately, I'm flareing again and my new Doc decided we should give 6MP a try. I was reluctant when it was brought up several months ago and insisted on trying certain diets. Well once my brief remission was over I started to have anxiety of how I know I'd soon feel and gave in. So I'm excited for the possibilities. I'm about a week into the medication and don't feel any affects, as I don't anticipate anything for another month or so. However, I'm flareing pretty good at this point and have a few simple questions for those of you who have been on 6MP, successfully.

1. How long did it take for you to start feeling positive affects? Also, how quickly did you go into remission (if at all)?

2. How long were you in remission?

3. Were you taking anything else with your 6MP (I just take mesalamine)?

4. Since I'm flareing and don't anticipate to have any relief (if any) for several more weeks, can I take prednisone as well to maybe mitigate my symptoms? Or is that a huge risk given the strength of 6MP?

I started 6mp quite some time ago, it may be over two years at this point. I should have kept better record. I didn't respond to it initially, I was feeling very discouraged and I thought it wasn't going to work for me. I fought for months with elevated liver enzymes and blood count issues. After about 5 months, my blood issues were bigger than my UC because my UC had completely gone into remission. I had to stop 6mp for a few weeks to get things back on track and I restarted it at a lower dose and since, I haven't had any problems with UC or my blood work. I hope you have luck. Just remember to get blood tests regularly.

I take Lialda but half the dose I was taking pre-6mp.

I'm off my colazal right now because it obviously did nothing since the time I started it in February and I've only gotten worse and needed up in the hospital.

How did Colazal put you in the hospital? Have you tried sulfasalazine?

TotesMagotes, you might have mentioned this before (can't remember), but have you tried Asacol? I know they're apparently discontinuing it, but there's another brand name of it (Delzicol) and a high dose version (Asacol HD--basically worth two tablets of regular Asacol). I couldn't take Colazal at all, but Asacol has worked very, very well for me in the past.
