UC or Not?: Positive Biopsy, negative Bloodwork

I have a POSITIVE (+) biopsy, but NEGATIVE (-) bloodwork. The bloodwork done included Zinc, ESR and CRP (inflammatory tests).

What does this mean? Do I have UC?

Yes. bloodwork is not a diagnostic tool. It is simply a way to gather more supporting evidence.

unfortunately biopsy is the "gold standard" when it comes to an IBD diagnosis - everything else is secondary. Some IBDers present with normal blood work even in quite severe flares. Scopes and biopsies are what the Dr will rely on.

My first GI cost me thirteen months of treatment because of negative blood work, even though she had pathology reports showing UC. I didn't get a confirmed diagnosis until I was in the hospital.

I've never had any signs of inflammation in my blood and I have had positive biopsies.

Kazbern and killcolitis have answered your question. Same as notsosicklygirl, even when I am in flare, my CRP and ESR falls within normal range.

I concur with the others, yes on the UC diagnosis.

What did your doc say?

And how is he treating you?

I have been in nasty flares with completely normal ESR and CRP as well- agreed, bloodwork is often false negative for active inflammation.

What exactly do your biopsy results state from the pathologist?

There's no positive for UC...it's a consistent with especially if the doctor suspects it.

The bloodwork isn't a diagnostic tool, it will, however, give insight into how your body works when flaring. Some show inflammation when flaring, others do not.
