Prednisone not working??

Last year Pred pulled me outta my flare and had me eating and energized. Second week on 60mg for this flare that started a month ago and NOTHING. Seem to be getting worse. No energy and no appetite. What will the next step be? Getting worried :/ how could it not work this time.

Pred can take longer than 2 weeks to work. It took at least two weeks before I noticed anything, and then a few more weeks after that till the results were of significant. Certainly, if it doesn't start producing results soon you'll have to look into alternatives. Should pred fail, I would say the next step would be Remicade, as it usually produces results for most people within a couple weeks.

Were you doing anything (like taking 5ASA's) while in remission? That is a must because if you go in remission and don't do anything to stay there then you will eventually have another flare and many times those future flares get harder and harder to treat and what worked before might not work again. The goal is to achieve remission and continue with some kind of maintanence therapy FOREVER in order to never have another flare.

Sadly, just because pred worked for you once, doesn't mean it will work for you again. Some people build up a sort of resistance to it, and for some people (like me) it NEVER works at ALL! Since pred did not work for me, my GI's next step was to let me choose between Remicade and Humira. For insurance purposes, I ended up on Remicade...something like that may be your next step if the Pred doesn't kick in soon. I hope it DOES start working and that you heal quickly!

I was on lialda but stopped because I didn't think I needed it anymore. Now I'm paying for it. Anyways.. Will remicade produce even worse side effects? Also, can someone please tell me I'm not the only person who has a dry cough during a flare?? I have been coughing for weeks (worse at night).

machina, yes, coughing is one of my flare symptoms, too. i think it's from gastritis but i'm not positive.

This is my story as well -- went off lialda only to flare back up within weeks. I think much of my life can be categorized as preventable suffering.

I hate feeling like this. It's been over a month where I actually felt like a normal person and it's looking like a long road till I feel that again. I'm so fatigued at night I can't even eat. Maybe I should split my pred dose up. Also, maybe Zantac could help with the cough if it's caused by gastric stuff? Thoughts? Oh and thanks for the replies.. They really do mean a lot!
