UC probably more hormonal and not food related.

Somedude, interesting theory. But please help me understand why some women get it when they were never pregnant? Why do little babys and small children get it? There are no hormonal changes. And why do guys get it? They never get pregnant either. Maybe I'm totally misunderstanding you. It would be great if you enlighten me.

I was 17 when I got UC but I had no hormonal changes. I was just very relieved from all the stress at school for so many years. In those weeks of peace I had my first flare up.

I still believe it has different factors. For some it might be hormonal that's right. But there are many other reasons. I believe there are different "types" of UC just like there are different types of Diabetes.

I think people are getting too hung up on hormones. I don't see the theoretical basis of it, really. Crohn's/UC is a dysfunction of the immune system. Sure, the target is the colon, but it's the immune system doing the targeting. Perhaps I'm just thick but I don't see what hormones have to do with the immune system targeting the colon.

When it comes to the body you have to think in terms of chain reactions. Perhaps there is a genetic pre-disposition or a change from bacteria. I do know that most people get better on prednisone which is synthetic cortisol.

So not wanting to ever take that again, I am seeking what increases my cortisol naturally and trying to eliminate what destroys it.

Hormones, one of which is C-O-T-I-S-O-L are effected by familiar hormones, the SEX hormones. This is not direct but indirect.

Hormones may not contribute to the onset of UC, but they play a DAILY role in its management.

Look beyond the pregancy example I posted where Cortisol sky-rockets prior to delivery. It was just an example.

Everyone has hormones they regulate the human body and are always fluctuating.

Again I do not believe hormones cause UC - I believe they are strong contributors and indicators of flares.

A-ha! Men get men-o-pause also.


Honestly I used to believe that men have some sort of monthly cycles too. Haha

All the people who respond to prednisone have transient cortisol deficiency from adrental fatigue.

It is relative too, my adrenal output was fine before, then I changed my body composition etc. Now I need more and adrenals cannot ramp to 10x because I recently tapered off and they are not full strength yet.

I intend to continue reshaping and will need more cortisol output, while I wait for the adrenals to catch up I am doing the following :

Pregenolone ( a hormone they gave people BEFORE giving them prednisone ( fake hormone ) - which could be patented )
Licorice extract ( eats up the enzyme that eats up cortisol )
Caffeine - Boosts cortisol 30%
Adrenal Glandular - raw materials for adrenal glands and likely a little bit of cortisol too
RS diet
Slow the gut ( chew more, eat slower, eat smaller more often, librax, mebeverine )

The endocrine system is incredibly complicated. I think most people would agree that the physical changes wrought by stress on our bodies are made through changes in our endocrine system, maybe primarily cortisol.

Going back to my post from page 2 and PathogenKiller's question about gluten, the unfortunate fact is that I adopted a gluten free diet at the same time as my hormonal cycles were significantly reduced. So there are no scientific observations I can make that untangle the gluten question from the hormone question based on the remission I've achieved.

I can say, though, that during this recent uptick in inflammatory response my diet did not change, and my meds did not change and I didn't microwave any food in plastic containers containing BPA. ;-). In fact, I cleared all the BPA out our house more than five years ago.

The fact is, different triggers for different people, that includes hormones, food, bc pills, toothpaste, etc. Not everyone's triggers are going to be the same as anyone else's which is why IBD is so individual....there are many suspected environmental triggers and it's suspected that it's likely a combination of triggers that actually activate IBD for each patient.

No no, let me re-write this.

Higher secretion of certain hormones during pregnancy could be the trigger and the development of UC in some women.

Prior, the women never had UC, no nothing.

All women who get pregnant have changes in hormones. Not all pregnant women develop UC.

I think the cause is genes + bacteria.
I think its is a disease with a lot of inflammation so the hormone cortisol is critical to keeping it from spiraling out of control.
Hormones effect other hormones and I found several pathways that impact cortisol.
I got this disease around 42 and there were no significant hormonal changes at that time. Now I think it regulates my flare start/stop. Clearly fake cortisol has been able to stop the flares.

Not everyone is the same indeed.  Mine was not triggered by any hormone change.

Also, I live in Alberta, Canada....we have the highest percentages in North America....it may even be the world!

Goldenlover: can you beat Australia? i hear that the percentage down under here is one of the highest in the world.

As for hormones and UC, i think it's one of the puzzle pieces. Hormones + Certain gut bacteria = havoc!

I'll tell you how you fix it and this is the cure.

You endergo a bone marrow transplant. This will destroy your current immune system and generate a different one. The different one/new one will hopefully not have the current triggers.

Bone Marrow Transplant

Pros: If my suspitions are right, it's a cure and your body remains intact.
Cons: Dangerous, some remote chance of dying.

Colectomy:

Pro: The disease is gone, but you are altered physically.
Cons: Bag, different quality of life, etc etc, you know the story.

There's still a lot higher chance that you'll die during the process of a bone marrow transplant. I'd rather have surgery and possibly live with an ostomy bag than die.

honestly, for some of us, NOT an easy choice -

i'm a bit of a germaphobe, neat freak kinda guy - that whole stoma thing stickin out there and the hangin bag, man aesthetically, it's a nightmare - seriously !
