I just started the new replacement for Asacol about 1-2 months ago. It is supposed to be bioequivalent to Asacol. However, it is now a caplet stuffed inside a capsule. For me this makes it not distribute to the same part of my colon it used to, and because it is such a thick capsule, often doesn't disintegrate by the time I have a bowel movement. If you are taking this medicine I encourage you to check to make sure that this capsule is disintegrating. Part of what made Asacol effective for me (more effective than Pentasa for instance), it is distributed lower in the GI track, but with another layer on it, it is hardly distributing at all before I pass it.

Thanks for the feedback and I am sure what you're concerned about is an issue. Fortunately I switched to Lialda a while ago and it has a coating siimlar to Asacol. Is Lialda an option for you? Otherwise there is always Apriso or other options. I haven't tried delzicol so I can't say whether it is effective for me.

There's also Asacol HD which is basically just double Asacol pills (they look the same except they're twice as big). The bottle says, "NOT BIOEQUIVALENT TO ASACOL," but uh ... it's really the same thing.

This is a perfect example of what these huge drug conglomerates value.
It certainly isn't our health, for me dealing with my UC has been an absolute balancing act, to change any of my meds is an almost certain disaster.

I don't think there is anything terribly different with the medicine. I would keep away from taking it too close with any fiber filled foods or supplements. For a while I was taking asacol too close to my fiber supplement and it would shield it for dispersing in my gut.

It did not seem to be working well for me either, so my GI switched me to Apriso, which is actually working very well. You can get a discount card for it (none for Delzicol, which was $210/mo for me) on their website aprisosavings.com which has a bunch of happy hipster peeps on it....yeah right, such a joy living with IBD!

That doesn't make any sense because if you even just stick the capsule in a glass of water, it will start dissolving within less than a minute. There is no way the capsule would make it past your stomach acid. I spoke with the pharmaceutical company who manufactures Delzicol and the tablets still dissolve in the exact same location Asacol did. What you might be seeing are the "shells" of the tablet. Sometimes, Asacol tablets would pass through me without the medicine coming out. You can take the tablets out of the capsule too if you're concerned. I do this because the capsules are harder for me to swallow.
