I am taking 6mp which is similar to Imuran and I've had very good luck staying in remission. I don't think anyone wants to take these medications but I am thankful something is helping me to feel well.

what I was told by GI doc is long term of taking Imuran, patient are more likely to develop neutropenia in early stage.

How long you been on 6mp ? what sides effect are you experiencing ?

I had neutropenia but i stopped 6mp for a while and I was able to start it again at a lower dose and I've been fine since. I don't have any side effects.

I never took both of the medicines together but I stopped the 6-mp before I started Remicade... I had a difficult time sleeping when I was on 6mp/Imuran ... My GI also said their were some slight risks in taking both together, I forget what the risks were.... This was 5/6 years ago, this could have changed since then.

What did your GI say about taking both together?

Ks1905, i think you misunderstood my message.

Taking either Imuran or Remicade, not together.

I am on 2nd line treatment as 5ASA is not strong enough to settle my inflammation. I am taking predisone 40 mg po daily for 2 weeks, then see my GI doc. but the med treastment plan is after 2 weeks, tap off 5 mg every week, then 0 mg. total of 9 weeks.

I just hoping I don't get any of the side effects of predisone !

So, Ks1905, What medication are you taking for UC/ CD ? Did you reach remission yet? since when ?

I've taken both and was in remission with both... Totally different medications, both had their positives and negatives. I think overall I liked Remicade better for my UC.

What worked for me may not work for you and vice versa.

Humira did not work for me, I just started Simponi 7 days ago.

I took Imuran for 2 1/2 years. Had remission for that long until my WBC dropped, badly. I was taken off, then put back on the medicine. It continued to drop even at the lowest dose.

If you're at this stage where you need this kind of medication, then write up a pro and cons list. See what out ways the other. Do research on the medications. Learn your family history before taking them. If there is a family history of lymphoma or skin cancer, I would advice not to take it.

Tira, if you use the search option on here, you will find lots of information about both treatments. Many of us have been or are on one or both of these meds.

Usually (though not always) after failed attempts to control our disease with 5ASA's. Some Docs. seen to prefer treating from top down meaning more and more often they are starting with bigger meds (ei: remicade, 6mp's) before mesalamines.

I am taking both at the same time. I've gone from pancolitis to 15 -20 cm of moderate / severe ulceration. I am still symptomatic and bleeding. My GI now wants me to switch from Imuran to MTX.

Remicade makes me tired after the infusions. Imuran doesn't appear to have any side effects. Imuran is my favorite, because there aren't any needles. Oh, well, there are frequent labs...

I've taken both. Imuran was completely ineffective for me, while Remi has kept me in remission since 2006. I had no significant side effects from either, although my first idiot GI got my Imuran level too high and it affected my liver function until the dosage was dropped.

I was on both for about a year, then there were stories of the combination possibly being associated with lymphoma, and my GI took me off the Imuran since it didn't seem to be doing anything for me anyway.

Just goes to show you, we're all different.

I've been on 6MP for 9 months. It's working for me, but have had some asthma complications.
