Men heeding to fish oil warnings?

My dad stopped his macula degeneration vitamin after what came out on the news today about fish oil, so I'm looking for a different one..wondering if any type of fish oil is safe? (for men)

I was wondering if there was going to be a thread on this. I haven't had time to look up much about it, but I thought I saw it was the third study that had revealed the prostate risk and even the one the media reported on today was kind of old...? I heard a doctor discussing the study and he just said eat salmon a few times a week and not take the fish oil supplement at all if you are male.

Either way, it seems the more I learn the more mega doses or supplementing with vitamins really isn't that good for you.



Also saw a study today saying there is no detriment to basically any amount of salt intake. There will probably be a contradictory study on that by morning.

All true, my dad is just an extreme worrier! I would have a hard time dealing with it too if something I ordered caused something bad, because I'm the one who has been online trying to research what is best for his eyes. He has just been diagnosed with it. I hope they figure it out because seems like the fish oil supplements have benefits to some degree..We're in a small town where I don't think you can even get good salmon, have to drive 30 minutes.

Yeah I saw that this morning and was glad I dont eat salmon much anymore mostly grass fed beef.

I saw the article and did a search. The study was criticized because it did not track outcomes. Prostate cancer is extremely common and usually doesn't need to be treated at all. Did users of fish oil get more cancer but die of it less often?

It also bothered me that they did not state how much fish oil you would need to consume to get the high blood levels. Maybe high blood levels are a marker for prostate cancer risk and have nothing to do with fish oil consumption? Maybe people that take fish oil supplements have poor health or another risk factor? I think people do tend to continue bad habits and use supplements to enable their bad behaviors and diet. "I know I shouldn't eat a 16 oz steak every night but I took my fish oil and had lots of vegetables with it"

I think population studies of actual cultures, and their diets and lifestyles are much more valuable than these types of studies especially when they study individuals that left that culture and adopted American behaviors and eating habits. Pretty clear that rural Japanese are healthier than Americans and lose much of that better health when they move here.

My boss was talking about this today. He said that his doctor yesterday told him about this study and told him to stop taking fish oil supplements. He said that eating fish once or twice a week is more than enough.

Everything in moderation.....Unless you just cant eat something for some reason allergies intollerance etc....

Another indication its better to get what you need from food not supplements. Fish is fine, isolated pills maybe not as good. But are they actually bad ? Who knows sounds like studies go both ways. We have seen this with many other supplements. Things are more bioavailable mixed in with the natural food source than they are isolated in supplement form.

I agree food is better--I bought some spinach seed that I'm trying to get him to plant when it turns a little cooler..Spinach is supposed to be full of lutein. I'll still take supplements that don't hurt because even though I try to eat healthy, I get in a hurry and don't get all I need.
