Welcome to the forum, 2 feathers.
It's great that you were in remission for 22 years, all due to smoking, uh?
Well, nowadays the docs are pushing the biologics - which, IMO, come at a great cost $$$ and big side effects.
There are lots of other things you can do to manage it yourself, which will at the very least minimize your symptoms greatly, and if you are interested in this, there are things IMO that you can control, which will have a direct impact on
your disease, the symptoms you experience and their severity.
I was able to control my UC into remission through various
supplements, probiotics, diet modification, and LDN , low dose
naltrexone.
For more info on the protocol which has put me into remission,

I hope you feel better and let us know how we can help
you.
