6mp/allopurinol with remicade

I will be starting remicade in two weeks. . . My doctor told me that I will still be on my 6mp with the remicade. I was under the impression I would be able to go off my other medication. Did anyone else have to do I this way? I think this causes the chance of cancer to go up?? I am actually a little nervous now. . .  Thanks for the support.

I'm not on it, but my doctor is thinking of putting me back on 6mp. Yes from what I understand the chances increase, but the difference is negligible as they are so remote. Apparently the work in synergy and prevent the body from creating antibodies... At least that's how I understand it

I've heard the same thing jac said. I think people stay on 6mp to avoid building up antibodies to remicade. I was on 6mp and allopurinol and I don't think that's usually used as a longterm treatment. I took the combo until I got into remission, then I had to stop allo due to low wbc and I stayed in remission.

My daughter stayed on 6MP for a few years on Remicade for the same reasons, there is evidence that you don't build up antibodies. After awhile, they said it probably was unnecessary,as it is most important in the early times of Remi treatment and she probably wouldn't build up the antibodies. She never did. Unfortunately, it just stopped working. It was wonderful while it lasted. I hope you get a few great years on it!

I'm currently on Remicade and my GI doesn't want me on 6MP. Sadly, the Remicade has seemed to stop working. I'm starting to flare again. Not sure if 6MP had anything to do with it.

I've been on azathioprine and Remicade together for five months. My liver function tests are ok, but apparently the azathioprine is metabolizing on the liver pathway. I'm going off of it for two weeks, then going back on, but at only 50 mg and with allopurinol.

Staying on Remicade - this infusion will be one year. I still don't think it does anything :-/
