I guess I never understand retail outlets, restaurants, or other public places that have just ONE BATHROOM.
Two bathrooms (men/women) is better but even then there is just one toilet in the men's!
It's like if the door is locked "sahly chahlie"! I swear, people who design these buildings have no colon. It's even more amazing when you go into a big brand new, expensively-designed public place, and there is the ONE TINY BATHROOM. LOL
My favorite building was at a science building in a university. The mens room had a row of at least 10 stalls! Finally someone gets it!!!!!

Oh I absolutely hate this too. While traveling by car, my family prefers Subway and they offer one bathroom. I have been known to find another restaurant or store nearby that offers several bathroom stalls (Target for example) and walk the distance while they eat just so I can use a bathroom without anyone knocking for me to hurry up (my second peeve after a restaurant offering one bathroom).
John - had a smile when you described the university's 10 stall men's room. My daughter's college had a 6 story student center that had restroom's on each floor with at least 20 stalls in each bathroom. That was my place to go if we were visiting her and I had to stay near a bathroom for a while, I'd say drop me off and you go run your errands with your dad. I was so happy to learn that building had 120+ toilets at my disposal.
I don't understand how restaurants can get away with this either, what if it's out of order, then where do the employees go to relieve themselves?

All comes down to cost. The less they build the more money in their pocket.

Most of the time, local laws require them to provide a bathroom for clients. So they do that - provide "a" bathroom. Dsm is right, it's all a matter of cost and profit. Think how many widgets they can display in the square footage required for one stall!

I absolutely agree. They just think that people want to come to eat not to crap.
Crazy and brainless designer is what a person with UC think.

The one I hate the worst is McDonalds. They are ALWAYS busy and the men's restroom only has one stall. Winning the lottery would be easier.

I hate this more than anything. It is definitely about
cost but it's ridiculous. My family gets it b/c they know if we are going out to eat and I choose, then there's a list of places i'm gonna go. I think they are tired of Bob Evans for breakfast! They always have two stalls in the men's room.

Ive been on many road trips and what I hate the most is when you stop off the e-way to use a restroom at a gas station in a small rural town and they only have one unisex bathroom AND you need to get the key from the attendant. Then when you go in there, the bathroom is super dingy with a one ply toilet paper roll.

I actually went into an establishment and there were two bathrooms, labeled #1 and #2. This was a local place and we do not have special septic as far as I know, but even so it was not good. I was in ther for a little while and sure enough someone was waiting when I
opened the door.

This drives me batty too! My favorite lunch/brunch place only has 1 bathroom. It is very popular (the restaurant not the bathroom lol). And it always makes me nervous!

I bet if they did have no colon they would have not made just 1 bathroom lol
My first job had only 1 toilet for employees. The other toilet was for the boss only. Never understood that. So I was blocking the employee toilet for 30 minutes or longer. One time my boss told me to go to the basement and use the toilets there (which were never used) when we had guests around. How embarrassing lol
And a little side note to how my boss treated me when I had a flare: I had to fill out a list where I had to note down time, minutes, reason, date and signature everytime I went to the bathroom... One day I made it to the bathroom (flaring!) on the breaks only and next day someone wrote on the list: absence time??? No joke. I went to a lawyer to get rid of that list.
I think every building and restaurant should have at least one men, one women and maybe even one handicap bathroom.

Andrina! That bathroom list sounds like a job nightmare. I probably would have attached following each time:
Time: 9:40am
Minutes: That depends on the severity of my Ulcerative Colitis today.
Reason: Ulcerative Colitis causes swelling, ulcerations, and loss of function of the large intestine. I am unable to sit for long periods of time due to abdominal pain, watery diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. In ulcerative colitis, the inflammation affects the lining of the rectum and large intestine. The inflammation begins in the last segment of the large intestine, which empties into the rectum (sigmoid colon). It may spread through the entire large intestine, but only rarely affects the very last section of the small intestine (ileum). The first symptoms of ulcerative colitis are abdominal cramping and pain, a sensation of urgent need to have a bowel movement (defecate), and blood and pus in the stools. Patients experience diarrhea, fever, and weight loss. If the diarrhea continues, signs of severe fluid loss (dehydration) begin to appear, including low blood pressure, fast heart rate, and dizziness.
Ulcerative Colitis is covered under the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). Employers are required to make “reasonable accommodations” to assist their employees. This includes allowing enough time for frequent restroom breaks, moving an employees’ workstation closer to a restroom, time off or unpaid leave for doctor’s appointments, flare-ups or hospitalizations, and providing flexible work schedules or telecommuting opportunities.
Note to Boss: "GO SUCK ON A DONUT!"

I encountered this worry on vacay. We stopped at libraries to use their wifi and small libraries usually have just one loo. The very thought of waiting for someone was enough to start things up and there was
always
a knock on the door under a minute, more anxiety.
In my hometown no problems, the library has several stalls and never a line lol.
Going to large events, especially outdoors, causes anxiety, too many people, too few toilets.

Just another dictation our wonderful disease has on us...avoid places with limited restrooms when you have IBD, add that to the list of a million other things we can't/shouldn't do thanks to IBD. Can't even recall the last time in my life I was able to picnic in a park that generally doesn't have any kind of restroom...before IBD it was never a thought, since IBD all you can do while sitting on the toilet a million times a day is think about
all the limitations that are now in your life...fun stuff.

LOL John! Exactly!
It was in Germany but even then he should have treated me better. In fact I gave him a letter of my GI but my boss just filed it away without ever reading it. Oh and btw I won the case with my lawyer

I base MANY decisions on where to eat/shop based on their bathrooms! 1 stall = not likely, no bathrooms = not happening! I stopped going to CVS for years due to this. I also find many smaller, better restaurants only have 1 unisex bathroom with a constant line. That makes for a highly stressful dinner!

I hate that! I once went to a restaurant/bar that the men's bathroom had one stall but no door. Stall was so small that even if you used it anyone that walked in could see you doing your business. I also went to a night club for a friend's birthday night out and the mens bathroom had NO TOILET! I freaked! When that happens I just walk into the Women's bathroom! I don't give a hoot! I'm not going to crap on myself just because the place is being a cheap ass!
