Mesalamine intolerance symptoms

Some of you have developed intolerance to this treatment. I think I have too. My symptoms are varied based on oral or rectal delivery. I just wonder what happens to you on the drug if you are intolerant.

My main symptom with oral is wicked, brain crushing headache. With the enema it just made everything worse down there.

Luckily I haven't had any headaches from it up to this point. With the enemas, I do agree that they seem to make thinks worse for me. I gave them up over a month ago. They were also really hard to keep in during a flare.

Can a person take cortifoam indefinately? Its not a steroid right?

Cortifoam is indeed a steroid and I don't think it's wise to use it long-term.

Since your reactions are so different to the oral vs rectal mesalamine, I wonder if the reaction to the enema is actually a sulfite reaction (used as a preservative in the enemas) instead of a mesalamine reaction. I'd maybe give sulfite free Rowasa a try to see if you can tolerate it.

That is a great idea Fruit, thank you. I will mention it to my dr. today. I am hoping to go in with a plan. I think I will try this Apriso for a bit longer, unless the headaches become all day occurrences. I am just looking for a enema solution, so this rowasa, sulfite free might be just the ticket.
Thanks again! I am trying to avoid a step up to the next class of drugs if possible.

DMC,

  I just wonder what happens to you on the drug if you are intolerant.

For me, it was very bad headaches, and terrible watery D, and stomach cramps.

So ah ha! I am not the only one with headaches! I had WD one day but that seems to have subsided this week with apriso. And not horrible cramps this week. But cramps a couple weeks ago probably fm ennies!

Still going to ask dr about LDN today as my next plan of action.

I have learned that what works today might not work tomorrow so it's good to have a plan. ;-)

You do need to be careful, though, to not try too many different things at once and to not bounce from treatment to treatment too quickly. If you do the former, you won't know what is and isn't working (and isn't) and might end up taking things that you don't need to, or, if you react badly to something, you won't know what's causing the reaction. If you do the latter, you don't really give anything a chance to work. It can take a while for treatments to get the inflammation under control and calm the symptoms.

I know fruit girl. I am trying not to do that, not easy. But Apriso and cortenema is what I just started but I can't stay on it long. I mean cause its a steriod. I think I have one weeks worth left. My dr might want me to finish it or keep going. I don't know. Gonna schedule a colonoscopy soon. Since I am feeling better (today) I really don't want to do one though! I have heard here that they can bring on flares!!! I am just calming down and would hate that!

I hear ya though, trying to give treatment time.
