I was at my GI appointment yesterday and he is recommending I get the pill cam test done. I had the small bowel barium test done and it was inconclusive. I occasionally have right sided pain I also have been getting mouth ulcers and some joint pain. I am guessing he wants to rule out chrones.

I of course thought of more questions after my appointment. Wouldn't the biopsy report from my colonoscopy give a definite diagnosis? My report stated rectal biopsy: fragments of colonic mucosa with severe acute and chronic inflammation with crypt abscesses and crypt architectural distortion, favor IBD/ulcerative colitis. Right left and transverse stated fragments of unremarkable colonic mucosa.

I also had the promethius test done that showed ulcerative colitis. However I know this test is not reliable.

I am close to remission currently. Would anything even show up on the test if I did have issues since my symptoms are doing well?

Has anyone had experience with this test?

Interesting that your GI decided on doing the pill cam now. I saw one of these done on some tv show. Very interesting.

Apparently your doctor has some doubts. Personally, I believe your diagnosis is correct but then again I'm just a person on the internet. I talked to my doc about the promethius test once and he said that even though they are not ALWAYS accurate, he seemed to think that they were actually accurate most of the time, particularly when the results are backed up by other means. I think the tests get a bad rap because promethius is often not in insurance company's network.

Can biopsies be wrong?

A biopsy will tell the depth of the inflammation in you colon wall. Typically, uc inflammation is pretty shallow, whereas chron's is much deeper tissue damage. Although I don't think biopies are 100% conclusive in a uc diagnosis. rather it is just one piece of evidence that points to a diagnosis (e.g. shallow tissue damage, inflammation starts at rectum, is continuous without patches, etc.). There are some where the area is quite gray/contradictory.

Hopefully, the exploration of your small intestine rules out chron's.
