Hi Q and hateuc -
All went well. Apparently there's some mild inflammation in the few areas that were inflamed last year, but nothing looked bad.
I think it's an irony that I have my annual scoping at the time of year I am likely to have some issues. But, ho well.
We got to the endoscopy center at 6:50, we sat and waited until 7:20 (argh!) until they called me in and it all went fast after that.
When the doctor came in, I could hear the staff all up and down the hall admire and tease him for his nice shirt and bowtie. As he came into the room, I said to the nurse, "He dressed like this for my 28th colonoscopy - wait till you see what he wears for my 30th!" We all had a chuckle.
Apparently, Heather, antibiotics used to be standard for folks with artificial joints for any kind of bacteria-producing procedures. High on that list is dental cleaning! Colonoscopies would be higher on the list for those of us who have a lot of biopsies. I hadn't thought about
it, but of course if bacteria get loose in one's system, the artificial joints produce no white cells to fight off infection, and an infection in an artificial joint is a nasty business.
But more recent research has shown that the abx are not necessary as long as the surgery is fully healed, which can be up to a year, depending on what the surgery was. Since my hip replacement was 5 months ago, both Drs were in agreement I should have them. So I did, by IV, prior to the scoping. I have never found any ill results from a "one shot deal" of IV antibiotics, but I hit the probiotics as soon as I got home!
I had a lovely nap this afternoon and I'm sure I'll sleep well tonight. Ahhh....
