Can you mix Rowasa and Cortenema together?

HI all,

So flare piping up. (I think I always have mild rectal inflammation but sometimes it is quieter than others).  I already use Rowasa daily.  I need to bump up action though....when I use the full Cortenema...I experience side effects (insomnia, depression etc..) I know it is strange as it shouldn't be majorly systemic..but hey, it happens.   So I had the idea to try using 1/2 the Cortenema to get the steroid and mix in 1/2 Rowasa so it still has the same volume of liquid so it can go as far up in the colon as an enema should.

So can you mix?

I don't see why not, but practically I am not sure if you mean using half of each enema and "mixing" internally?

I don't know...I would think that if they were meant to be mixed together, there would be a concoction that has it.

BUT....

Try it and see how you do....it might be the next new medication out there....

Thanks guys!! I am having a new theory too on why I am having a problem. Whenever I bump up to 3 Lialda, I have a slight mesalamine intolerance (I have urgency, loose stool, cramps where my normal symptoms are more mucus, consitpation, tenesmus). Seems I can only tolerate 2. Lately to experiment, I have been using the Rowasa early in the day and retaining all day, into the night and expelled the next morning. I am wondering if after doing this for a few weeks, it started to build in my system and is giving me similiar problems like the 3 Lialda did.

So like Q said, I am going to experiment yet again. I did do 1/2 Rowasa and 1/2 Cortenema this morning. After my new theory, I think I am going to skip the extra Rowasa today and tomorrow just do a Cortifoam. Next day (at night) try Rowasa again. I guess all you can do is try. I hope I don't experiment myself into a big flair. I guess we will see. If you have any input or suggestions, pls feel free. Thanks as always!!

Hi...your UC is limited only up to the sigmoid or including the sigmoid/descending?

Have you tried Apriso yet?

You won't experiment to a big flare.

I still encourage you to try the Metamucil capsules rather than or in addition to the wafers.

Have you tried the Reuteri probiotic as of yet?

Hi Q... Dr didn't want to do Apriso...said he wanted to try Bentyl and start w.that. I haven't called him yet, I am hoping to work this out on my own, but we will see. My inflammation was always rectum and lower sigmoid. However we were all surprised that biopsies showed inactive colitis throughout. It was a shock.

I will retalk to dr. about Apriso if needed. I'm not sure why he wanted only Bentyl...I guess one thing at a time. I know two totally different things Apriso and Bentyl. I think Apriso it is a good option. Hmmmm new probiotic sounds interesting. What brand?

I think you need to push for Apriso since it's a lower dosage with better efficiency in the way it releases. worth a try.

Bentyl is an antispasmodic...nothing more. it can help with some symptoms, discomfort, etc...but won't do anything for inflammation.

The fact that you have inactive signs of inflammation throughout your colon means that you're not getting effective coverage with the oral 5ASA...it should be increased (which you cannot with the Lialda) or improved release...which the Apriso is.

Of course, you can always try another such as Pentasa?
Low dosage, but different release (although it releases higher in the small intestine than the terminal ileum as does other oral 5ASA.

I'd suggest the primadophilus reuteri such as I'm using...hey, it helped my cat =^..^= as well.

Thanks Q. I double checked the report and it said....visual was totally clear (except for rectum and lower sigmoid). Biopsy for rectum was mild chronic colitis. Mild inflammation. Biospies for other areas...chronic inactive colitis. No inflammation present. I agree w/ the Apriso. I am not sure why he was so against it last time. I know Bentyl would do nothing for the inflammation. Usually he works w/ me with most things so I wonder why he was against it.

I'll check out the Metamucil capsules...I think I am finally going to take the plunge w/ this. Can't really hurt and it is over the counter. I'll also check out the Reuteri..i am always a little weary of a new probiotic..I"ll just go slow. (Hey if it helps your cat...lol) Seems like my body is dose sensitive to things. I can take some but not over do it.

Appears that I can't totally ever rid myself of the rectal inflammation no matter how dedicated I am to the rectals. Literally doing Rowasa nightly for years. Always simmering at least. Darn rectum is so stubborn.

You started cortifoam about a year ago, has that been helping you? The cortifoam improved my rectal inflammation within a week or so, which a month and a half of rowasa was unable to do :(

I've mixed the two. Did it for about 2 weeks . Had the same side effects . Gradually decreased the amount of cort. Eventually was using full amt of Rowasa . Worked well.

Thanks guys! RizK, yes Cortifoam has helped. I try to use it as needed -so hasn't been the full year and a half. Seems like this one, though, the Cortifoam was not cutting it so I moved on to steroid enema, which I don't like due to the side effects...but hate a flair worse.

Thanks FaithMac, Good to know that someone has done it already. I am also thinking of trying Cortifoam 2/day and see how that goes. Ya know, just trying.

When flaring used cortifoam in the am and the mixture in the pm. Really helped!

I'm glad that's helping. I thought it'd be OK to mix them. So far I've mixed three things with Roawasa (at separate times of course, not all together): Vitamin E, VSL, and soy lecithin granules. As I've said before, I'd stick a hot poker up there if it had a 50% chance to cure me. ;)

lol Levi...hot pocker. I am not laughing too hard though as I would also be willing to try. I haven't been feeling great w/ the steroid E's so I am now trying Cortifoam 2/day and Rowasa 1/day. I hope this works...so sick of this darn thing.....
