Washington State Votes to Label GMO Foods

"...On November 5, residents of Washington State voted on a law
to label genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and genetically engineered (GE) foods, nabbing the distinction of being the first US state to successfully do so.

Last year, we lost the vote in California’s Prop. 37 by the narrowest of margins. However, the Prop 37 campaign created massive awareness across the US, awakening millions of Americans to the issues surrounding GMO’s. Now, the people of Washington State have spoken loud and clear: GMO’s must be labeled. With mounting evidence of harm, food companies and biotech companies can no longer be allowed to hide such ingredients. You have the right to know what you’re feeding your family..."

Interesting. All of the articles I read, some of them recent, said the initiative was failing by quite a wide margin but that the final tally had not been finished yet. I wonder which one it is.

I was just looking at WA election results (I used to live there), and the measure didn't pass -- 45.19% yes and 54.81% no.  Strange that the Mercola site is saying it did.

At the end of the day, you have to see just how much money the corporations poured into the campaign to see why it didn't pass.

"The No on 522 campaign set a record for fundraising, bringing in $22 million in donations according to The Seattle Times. Just $550 came from Washington residents, according to the newspaper. The top five contributors were the Grocery Manufacturers Association, Monsanto, DuPont Pioneer, Dow AgroSciences and Bayer CropScience."

I just heard on the radio this AM that the measure didn't pass in WA...??? A shame, I wish it was mandated for all states. Whatever your personal beliefs on GMO foods are, everyone should be aware of what they are eating, & Where it came from!

One article I read about it not passing stated that the law was flawed in many ways. It's possible they just wrote the law very badly and that is the only reason it was voted down. Maybe if they rewrote it without all the flaws it would have passed. Who knows.
