Hi guys, my head is aching so bad I'm have trouble with post. I have been on 5 asa, 1600mg a day now for 10 days, for panUC. It has worked well for the abdominal pain that I had, but Friday night I woke up with a slight fever, diarrhea and a bad headache. This has happened every night since. Last night I had bad cold shakes and my temp was 38 Celsius( 100.4 F). I have an appointment with gastro doc Thursday, so for now I'm going to keep taking the 5 asa. I don't want to make the UC worse by stopping it. I've been taking tylonol 3 for the headache with some releaf.
Have any of you guys had these side effects?
Could these symptoms be caused from the flair? I'm new to UC.

It's possible that your symptoms are caused from the meds, but you may have caught a virus. Which medication are you taking? I haven't experienced any real noticeable side effects from Asacol or Apriso, which are both 5 ASA meds, but everyone is different. I know you have an appointment with your GI, but you should call before that and let them know what is going on.

How has your fluid intake been? Dehydration can bring on a headache. I noticed when I first started mesalamines I needed to increase the amount of fluids I drank otherwise I was more prone to getting a headache.

It does however sound like a possible virus because Of the fever. However it is possible to get a fever during a flare. I know that happens to me too. Are you only noticing the fever at night?

Thanks for reply's. The medication is a generic, on the bottle it says 5- aminosalicylic acid, not sure what the brand name would be. The fever does seem to be at night, it wakes me up in a cold sweat. I bought some tylonol complete flu nightime pills, I need to get some sleep and I hope this helps. That would probably help this headache clear up. I have been drinking lots of water and some gateraid.

Night sweats and fever can go along with UC. Theses symptoms are always worse during a flare.

I would certainly talk to your doctor about it. I would also guess if it is a virus you would notice improvement by Thursday.

Get lots of rest and hydrate and hopefully you feel better soon.
