My UC has gotten much worse in the last few weeks. My doc switched me from Sulfasalazine to Asacol HD. I started taking it on Thursday. I never had such bad D in my life. I've been going at least 10 times a day with pain in my gut. I usually do not have bad D, just blood and mucous. Now, no blood or mucous but bad D.
Do you think this could be from the Asacol HD. Does my body just need to get used to it. Or could it be the stress from the holidays? Or a combo of both? I've had a housefull the past few days. I just need some kind of relief. This is not my normal symptoms.
I am now taking 3 Asacol HD in the morning plus a Cansasa if I can. Also Hydrocortisone enema before bed. I need some relief. Started VSL 3 again yesterday. I originally stopped because I thought that was making me worse.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Why did you switch off Sulfazine? Stress can definitely be a factor. The switch to Asacol could have been a factor. If you were taking Sulfazine 4 times per day and switched to taking Asacol only once per day that change could also do it. If the Asacol actually isn't giving you a problem you may want to take it 4 times per day instead of all at once. If you thought VSL was making you worse I don't think I would take it again. What put you in remission for 20 years? You need to find a good probiotic that you KNOW works and not only take it daily but megadose with it anytime you take antibiotics.

Is it possible you're intolerant of the asacol?
Sounds like it make you much worse, and the symptoms you are describing are the ones that they warn you about in the side effects listing.

Very similar to the intolerance results I had from the mesalamines.

Why not try to stop it and go back to the sulfazine and see if it stops?

Thanks for the replies. I took 1 Asacol HD this AM and a few hours later had 1 bout of bad D. I will not be taking anymore until I talk to my doc tomorrow. The reason I switched from sulfasalazine is because it wasn't doing anything for me. Still urgency, blood and mucous lately. I am able to retain Canasa suppository but not the Hydro. enema right now. That is usually not a problem. I'm confused because the blood and mucous stopped but not the horrendous D. So frustrating!
garylouisville, I don't know what put me in remission for 20 years but I do know what messed me up. I took antibiotics for a dog bite and the rest is history for the last 4 years.
