my wife has had ibs stuff going on for a while - lately she seems to think it happens at "that time of the month" ........

I know it's been talked about here, or at least i'm pretty sure ( I tend to not read that stuff unless it was posted by somedude ) but could someone confirm that there is a connection -

Yes, it is true that a lot of females have bowel issues at that time of the month.

I definitely think people have increased symptoms during that time. Often people who are normal will notice a bit of looseness or increased frequency. It must be hormonal.

For sure, for me. I take my pills in such a way to avoid having that happen.

This can happen to everyone whether you have IBS, UC, or you're 100% healthy. The naturally occurring hormonal cycle has a laxative effect.

Like Tornado I use the pill to skip most of my periods.

If you're not having a time of the month, you're not having time of the month bowel symptoms.

Blame it on prostaglandins...which affects the colon and surrounding organs. It also brings those awesome CRAMPS which are so memorable, even though I haven't had a uterus/ovaries since 1993.

If her cycle is right to the minute, then advil can help reduce the amount of prostaglandins. It was the only thing that helped with cramping for me.

I feel for her.

I must be strange, because my symptoms are worse around ovulation and improve after that way through my period. Pre-UC I would always get constipated right before my period.

Yeah, I often have strange poop issues the first day of my period. It SO adds to the joy of that time of the month. I don't (think I) have IBS, though.

Just be glad men don't have the equivalent of a period. After all, you know how we men seem to complain and ache about the littlest darn thing. I cite as an example "the man cold" where we say "honey can you get the remote control for me, that and my beer since they are just out of reach" lol.

I haven't had a period since June. I know my age, 47, probably plays a roll in that but I also think all the medicines I take do too. I was on some meds before then. I was in the hospital for 5 days in June. I came home taking a butt load of medicine. I take 41 pills a day. Not all different ones some are 2x3 daily. I'm not really concerned about it. Its been kinda nice not having one. :)

Ha! There have been times I've wondered how I make it through every month without bleeding to death. smilewinkgrin
