Hello everyone

First time posting, but a frequent reader.

I was diagnosed with left side Uc in May 2012, had a major flare in the winter of that year and was put on pred and imuran. Another flare occurred 3 months aftpredicted nd I seem to have had diarrhea ever since.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of any good ways to stop constant diarrhea.
I keep having nothing but the d with every bowel movement, to the point where I am at my whits end. I have 2-3 movements a day, without much urgency , but each movement has no formed stools.

I have been on remicade 5mg/kg since May and haven't noticed any significant improvement aside from reduction of urgency and frequency and blood.

I'm just wondering if people have seen improvement with metamucil at all.

My doctor is telling me that i.may have developed post inflammatory ibs. Has anyone else experienced this?

I don't believe in that IBS crap that doctors dish out. You have UC with absolutely no mention of IBS, you get treatments that either work or don't work, but if you continue to have symptoms all of a sudden they pull the IBS card out on you. You are having problems because your treatments aren't working well enough and it doesn't have one thing to do with magically coming down with IBS. Did you continue taking meds after you got better? If not that's why you flared again.

I would suggest trying to add some fiber to help harden your stools. Ive read a lot of posts on this board about adding psyllum husks and some other things.

Hopefully someone who actually knows more about it will come along and reply, lol.

Otherwise try the search option up in the corner for metamucil and look through some older posts :)

I think gary usually has posts that are very spot on. But, I have to say that I have personally found myself experiencing what people call IBS symptoms, even when my colon shows a complete remission.

What has helped me at different times:
-Cymbalta (the depression drug) slowed things down majorly for me and left me with long solid stools. But the side effects were too much for me.
-Lomotil: Slows down the transit time of the intestines enough that stools have a chance to build up some. It doesn't equal solid stools, but it does give the time necessary if you do other things as well.
-Diet: limit sugars and alcohol most of the time, and also experiment with dairy to find out what leaves stools loose.
-Fiber: The soluble fiber kind. There are two kinds of fiber. Fiber like in name brand benefiber is what you want. This combined with occasional probiotic use has brought me closer to regular formed stools at the times I've really tried to do this routinely.

Strangely enough, I've worked with a homeopathic doctor, and found one remedy with her that makes my stools completely formed. Unfortunately it also gives me deep depression, so I am unable to use that treatment.

For you I would suggest a combination of lomotil, moderate diet modification, and taking fiber with probiotics. You may be able to reach a point like I did where things seemed very manageable and then you can let some of these methods lax and see what you're able to get away with.

I have IBS and IBD and I didn't know till just recently. If your colon is healed and you're still having D then you most likely have IBS as well. To be sure, you will have to go get a probiotic from your pharmacy for IBS. I tried Tuzen and now I'm on Align and it has helped me a lot were I probably go about 1-2 times a day formed, as compared to 5-8 times loose before.

i'm kind of on the same issue. after my flare started last month i used cortifoam in the morning and salofalk enemas at night. blood stopped and i've been having 1 BM per day, but that 1 BM is pretty much just thick diarrhea. I started prednisone 20 mg this morning to try and fix that issue...

"inflammatory IBS" is a new one to me. I call bullcrap on that DR's comment. Maybe the OP made a mistake and the doctor didn't say "inflammatory IBS." Good lord, as soon as the word "inflammatory" gets in there it's IBD all the way, not IBS.

flyboy - have you had any discussions about increasing your remi frequency or dose? Have you been scoped since your original diagnosis?

Man! I hate "ibs" as a reason for anything. They might as well just say...huh, I don't know. Once they tell you it's ibs they expect you to drop it and not discuss it anymore mad

Regarding IBS, agree with some of the previous comments. Since IBS can be either D or C and it's cause is unknown, probably less than UC, it becomes a catchall. My Dr mentioned it when my flare persisted as well.

In your case it sounds like the meds have removed the symptoms so you have no urgency for example. But they have not corrected the dysbiosis so your body is still trying to flush some bad things out. Now comes the hard part which is the longer process of fixing that. I had initial success with diet mods like SCD and later with a modification of same in correcting D. Now having some success with the RS approach. D will likely take some time to resolve.

Exactly my point!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They don't even know what IBS is and yet the second they can't figure something out or can't explain it, all of sudden they diagnose you with IBS so they don't have to. I wholeheartedly believe that IBS and IBD are very closely related and not two completely different entities. I bet if a cure is ever found for one it will be the cure for the other as well.

My colon is 100% in remission, yet I still use the bathroom 5 - 6 times a day. I am almost thinking that my colon is no longer the problem, but rather my small intestines (too much bile perhaps).

resistant starches have totally formed up my poops. have you tried those?? i mainly eat green bananas and cold sweet potatoes.
