Since we UCers can not use NSAIDs, and Acetaminophen is not the greatest pain reliever, I wonder if anybody here has tried DMSO for topical pain relief, esp. pain of arthritic joints etc.
Those who read through late 1970s and 80s must remember the DMSO stories and how it was persecuted. Since then it has disappeared, Merck Index also changed the details in the mid-90s, but I am wondering if anyone is still using it, esp. preparations like Penetrex.
Thanks in advance.

Yea, I've used at least a teaspoon every day save two since 10.26.12. I used it specifically for my disease though-and topically as you mentioned.
It made me immediately better- notably my stool form. And even though I've been bleeding for about
a month and a half, it gave me a wonderful 13 month remission (previous longest was less than six) and my stools are still well formed. This has been the most slowly progressing flare ever with symptoms being only some mucus and blood, and going 3X/day instead of 2X more often than during remission. I don't ever remember having 'ghost wipes," where you wipe with TP and the TP is clean because the stool is so well formed, but I'm having those still most of the time even since I've been bleeding.
If you use it for pain relief make sure you get the medical grade version. I use Jacob's Lab and have had to call them with questions and they are very helpful and friendly. Also make sure your hands are very clean and clean your body where you apply it. Lastly, dry your body well, it will react with the water you left on your skin. I have done this and seen smoke rising off my belly. Usually it's not that bad- just irritates your skin and it's red for an hour or so though.

One problem with DMSO though is that it creates a horrible, horrible (for others around you) rotten fish like body odor oozing from your pours around 12 h later... Used it on and off for flares and it took a bit of the dge off the worst flares, but its effect was extremely mild in my case, while tending to create sunburn lik irritation on the skin, even when used at just 70% strength. i most used the gel, as its easier to apply. Used locally for joint pains I am sure it can be used more liberally without as many of the odor issues as when used for IBD per se... That odor makes it highly impractical unless one is a hermit, IMO.

Probiotic-the newer more pure/refined version doesn't leave that awful. The only time people could smell it on my breath was when I first started, I guess because it was oxidizing soooo much.
I use the 99.98 pc pure and don't dilute it at all, the liquid form, not gel.

K thanks Levi. Dont have UC anymore but I do consider it for things like local aches/sprains and that is good to know. Will check out those sources.

Thanks Levi,
Could you please direct me to the product you used?

Thanks in advance

Here you go. I use it strictly for my disease and not any joints. Let us know your results if you try it!

delta, i know you are specifically asking about
dmso but i wanted to see if you tried boswellia cream? i've been using it since 2011 because prednisone and all the other meds have really done a number on my joints/cartilage/bones. it helps so much. i even use it on my belly sometimes when my cramps are bad. i found it at a health food store but also order it online when i'm running low.

Thanks Joanna,
I have not tried it. I am scared of Methyl Salicylate. One Advil puts me in flare and methyl salicylate is pretty close to Aspirin.
Have you tried Salonpas? Its pretty similar to this one, except inactive Boswellia extract.
I have taken Boswellia orally for about
4 months, but did not see any benefit.
Offnote, I don't know why would they name this product Boswellin, there is nothing from Boswellia in the product (Boswellia extract is labeled as inactive ingredient).
