Mild proctitis (im in the uk)

Im new to these forums and just looking for some advice ...In 2001 i had rectal bleeding with mucus ..Was sent by my gp for a colonoscopy and they told me i had proctitis. I was seen by a consultant a couple of weeks later who told me to start on some cortifoam i think it was but in those 2 weeks between my tests and seeing the doctor i had found out i was pregnant and told i could not be treated .

consultant told me it would flare up really bad during my pregnancy but could not treat me but would send for me after the birth of my baby and start treatment ..however they symptoms all went away ..Bleeding stopped and felt fine again ..No follow up appointment arrived and i never chased it up ...

Forward to end of october 2013 the bleeding began again but this time i had large piles and seen 2 different doctors ..One at my surgery and one at A&E and had loads of bloods done and all came back fine ..Both doctors put down to my piles but A&E doc wanted me to see my own GP and be referred for another colonoscopy due to having had proctitis in 2001..

Seen my own GP and she is very thorough and knowledgable on bowel problems and she reckoned was my piles but wanted me seen for colonoscopy which i had on thursday last week . They told me i have mild proctitis and basically will send me out an appointment for the GI clinic :(

I had started using anusol hc suppositries thinking was just piles ..Should i continue to use them until im seen ? or stop using them ? Im also taking fybogel morning and night which seems to be helping as not as much bleeding now ...

I have no other symptoms with this other than the bleeding and mucus ..No pains , No diarrhea ..

Sorry for the long post ..I worry it wont clear up with treatment and i will get really ill ..Also i never had a full colonoscopy just a sigmoidoscopy does that make a difference ?

Welcome to the forum Susie.

If the anusol is helping your piles then you should continue using it. It won't change the inflammation at all. Your DR should prescribe something like cortifoam or, better, mesalamine suppositories or enemas.

Proctitis can be hard to get rid of, but if you are diligent with your meds you can get it into remission. Ignoring it is probably not a good idea in the long run - it could get worse.

Also, the mesalamine meds are perfectly safe while pregnant, but the steroid options like cortifoam are best avoided.

Thanks for replying to me and hopefully my appointment will come through soon so i can start getting treatment soon ...Im not sure what happened when i was pregnant but they only said they could not treat me ...Im hoping i can manage to get better with whatever they treat me with ..I was reading the leaflet last night about the anusol and it said its used for piles and proctitis , Should i carry on with the fybogel I also have psyllium husk capsules that i bought last year but not tried ..What is best to take if any ? FYbogel does seem to help sometimes as lessens the bleeding ..Hopefully i can get on top of things ...

Also my husband has booked for us to go on holiday to america in december this year and paid it in full and now worried i wont be able to go although i have a few months yet to get sorted and was there in december 2013 and was fine ..As they told me i had proctitis 2001 i have always declared it on my insurance every year so covered for it anyways.

Travelling to the US might make your condition flare a bit, but since it doesn't seem to bother you much I wouldn't worry.

As for fiber, some find it helps, some find it bothers them - give it a shot and see what happens.

Pregnancy is a weird process and diseases like proctitis follow the one-third rule: one-third get better, one-third get worse and one-third have no change.

Hopefully i will be sorted out by december ..Fingers crossed ..I go to the US every year for holidays and never had a problem apart from 2001 and then last year ...Thanks for the info anyways ..I will stick to the fybogel just now i think and hope it will continue to help me ..Cant beleive im getting problems again after 12 years of being ok ..I thought it had went away but now i dont think it had i think it was maybe lying dormant :(
