Hello newly Dx with Proctitis 2/27/14, could i still be in Remission with UC ?
And still be in a Flare with Proctitis
I have been in Remission for about 5years thanks to Remicade UC.

Absolutely..proctitis is the last 5-15 cm of the sigmoid just beyond the anal canal, where oral meds just can't get to, or the enemas pass by.

UC is farther up in the sigmoid colon and through the rest of it. I have had this many times over the years where I am flared only in the last few cm...Canasa (mesalamine suppository) has been a lifesaver for me to keep that in remission, when the rest of my colon has gone haywire (like now)!

Scott interesting that you mention pass by, I've often wondered if changing from supps to enema would over shoot the problem area.. I have proctitis also

My GI has me on the supps instead of the enemas for my proctitis. I only have 2 cm of inflammation so I need the med right there.

well, it does make sense....suppositories sit right there where proctitis is..right at the end, and the enemas go right past it to the sigmoid and left side of the colon.

I am using suppositories for proctitis. My gi told me only to use them when having a flare.
When I saw a different one he said that enema's particularly the foam ones just shoot straight past the rectum and are not effective there. He said using sups was ideal as Shearbear says. He told be to use them as maintenance too. I am using them now because I am in a flare but am definitely going to use them all the time. I only wish my first GI had said this and I may not have had two flares in the last year and ended up on steroids which I don't think are working too well.
