So I've had back pain (twisted vertebrae) and Sacroiilitis (this is inflammation of the SI joint - the SI joint is what holds your hip in line with your spine) since I was basically 17 (I'm now 44). I've had PT, been on various pills, seen a Chiropractor, had accupuncture, went to pain clinics, multiple MRI's and even had x-ray guided pain meds injected into my SI joints.....all to no avail. So I said screw it....I'm done, I will live with it.....UNTIL I seen my primary today. I think that he thinks I'm a challenge and he wants to prove that he can help me. He gave me an "attitude adjustment" about
4 weeks ago to help get rid of some sciatic pain (which helped btw) so today was the follow up. Now tho, my right knee cap has been hurting me when I go down stairs.
So he studied me like a bug pretty much. He found that my right leg is about
3/8" shorter than my left. Had me put my right foot on a magazine, remeasured my hips and found how much shorter it was. He wrote me a prescript
ion for a shoe lift which I got at a medical supply store. He thinks that my knee cap is out of alignment after many years of back pain (altered gait) so he gave me instructions to try to strengthen the muscles in my thigh around my knee.
Now, I am going to be highly annoyed and severely disappointed with the medical profession if a simple shoe lift can help me with the pain (btw, I have already noticed a very small improvement and I've only had it for 3 hours). Not ONE doctor has EVER told me that my right leg is shorter than my left! If that shoe lift helps....all those years of suffering.........I'm disgusted just thinking about
it!

Ohhhh boy, yeah I totally see what you mean. And I would feel exactly the same way. I would try to tell myself "Well at least catching it and correcting it now is better than if it were never caught and I went on in pain for the remainder of my life"... but let's face it, that wouldn't help a whole lot.
Well, I still am going to root for you that this will end the suffering even if you end up highly annoyed!

I agree, I would be highly pissed. I do however hope it helps you...imagine such a simple solution could be the answer.

I really hope that it helps you but you should not be pissed at the medical community for not looking at that angle, say at age 17. Just be happy that it helped, and enjoy the life.

That's just it Delta....I didn't have all that testing at 17. I had all that pretty much in my mid to late 30's. No one took me seriously when I was 17 so I let it go for a while until it became unbearable...which was when I was in my 30's. I remember crying in pain after working in the garden...I laid on the floor and the painful hip spasm's were a 9 on the pain scale...it literally felt like someone was tearing my hips apart. And I'm no wuss when it comes to pain.
But yeah....I'm not the type of person to hold a grudge or be angry for long but when I've seen nearly 10 docs in the span of this whole thing and not one caught that my whole problem began with a shorter leg.....I can't help but feel angry.

My right hip is about
half an inch higher than my left. I have back and hip pain as well. I have learned over the years to "crack" it to put it back in place. I also wear a shoe lift in all my shoes but the shoes that help the most are my wood and leather clogs. I think it's the hard wood that keeps things in place.
I sympathize with you. Mine wasn't noticed until I was pregnant and delivery didn't go as planned.
Hope the lift helps!

Yes he is John...he also has Uc btw :)
Larasmom.....What do you do in the summer time? I was thinking about
that earlier...I tend to wear mostly
open heeled sandals in the summer. So do you wear the lift even in the summer?
Btw, thanks to everyone that responded :)

Wow, it sounds like you have lucked out on an awesome primary! Here's hoping the lift solves your problem once and for all. If you can't use it in summer sandals maybe it will work in lightweight canvas sneakers or toeless shoes with covered heel. / Old Hat (33 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Do you have slight scoliosis as well? That would be tell-tale.
I have slight scoliosis and one leg that's longer/hip higher/shoulder higher than the other.
Our bodies sure compensate for that, but something always pays....I hope the increase height insole in the one show will help relieve much of your pain.
I don't think it would have been a total solution to your sacroiliitis , but it might have prevented some of the continued wear on that area and nerve pain, especially when you were pregnant.
Please let us know how you feel once you've added the inserts.
There are some sandals that have removable insoles that could be added to or built up from underneath.

Sherry,
Sometimes, its just not 'right' time to go certain way for a specialist, hence my comment. I mentioned a couple of times that DW is a physical therapist and she sees many teenagers or early 20s patients. She knows what the problem is, she knows the solution, but she can not administer it because of their developing bodies. She still tells them (and she strongly doubts how much they remember that) and notes it in their chart for future reference. I will not go in details for HIPAA, but we always have these discussions.
Please update how it goes.
