It occurred to me that my dog had colitis once. He had massive diarrhea for a day or two...then started pooping all blood and we rushed him to the vet. He had to stay over night, hooked up to IVs and stuff... But we got to pick him up a day and a half later and he was feeling better. The next day he was back to his normal solid perfect well timed poops. I think I covet my dogs colon blush I mean, no way I could go the whole work day without crapping in the house.

Just sayin is all tongue

Lol. After owning a few dogs over the years I truly understand why their gut is as tough as nails. I mean you see the stuff they eat? Cat turds, garbage, a rancid dead seagull tangled in the seaweed on a beach (true story), barf, and I could just go on and on... yet we eat undercooked meat and get sick... seriously tough gut with the mutts.

I'm sure you must know that colitis and what your dog had was different than UC. It would be nice if we could get over it in just a couple of days. Your post reminds me though of my first autoimmune disease, ITP. It is somewhat like UC in that there is no known cause or cure and doctors try to treat the symptoms and control the disease. Took my cat to a kitty hotel once at a vet's place when I was going out of town on a trip. I can't remember how, but the vet and I struck up a conversation about ITP as pets get it too. I was absolutely amazed that her knowledge of the disease seemed to far exceed many of the ITP people doctors.

Lol, yes Gary, I know my dog didnt have UC. He had a colitis brought on by antibiotics, turns out he's allergic to penicillin. Point is, Vet didnt tell him it was something he ate, or that he will have to learn to live with it etc. Seems like the dogs get better treatment. Oh! And HE didnt have to wait four weeks to see a doctor for his pooping problem, lol.

IPoop, yup, my dog eats all kinda of gross stuff, doesn't phase him. He thinks rabbit poop is a rare delicacy. Gross little fur beast.

my dog has great poops, too. i had once considered a dog fecal transplant because her poop is so easy to scoop up from the yard. i might grow fur and a tail, but i'd roll with it.

The veterinary field is ages ahead of allopathic medicine. Dogs rise from the grave when given hyper-immune colostrum formulas. They also use FMTs generously to treat intestinal disorders and with great success rates. Good things tend to happen in medicine when there is no mercentile agenda and just plain ol' good will towards animals.

Just a rant.

Huh? You must have stopped owning pets in 1980. I had 3 sick old dogs at the same time a couple years ago. $700 bills from the doggie ER. I think I paid $300 to put one to sleep after refusing to spend $3000 on chemo for completely futile cancer treatment.

I never really obsessed over my dog's poop until I got UC. I wish ALL my poops were like my dog's! My dog does get VSL #3 DS every morning. We share it.

I saw our golden retriever had eaten a plastic soda bottle one time. If your dog has ever chewed on one you know it's twisted all over with sharp edges everywhere.

It came out with his perfect poop with the sharp edges sticking out all down the length of it. I just don't understand how it didn't tear his gut to shreds. It was Mountain Dew or Mello Yello, so a green bottle and very discernible.

Dogs are strong because of their short colons. :( Unfortunately for us, all the flesh we eat rots in our gut for a while prior to pooping it out.

Yeah the things my dog has put in her mouth amazes me! So gross.

Anyone or anything at any time can have a bout of colitis which just simply means inflammation of the colon. Like with your dog who had a reaction to the medicine. Ulcerative colitis is just a whole other ball game with no quick fix unfortunately. My sister in law had a cocker spaniel who had UC. He was on meds until he passed.

I was thinking the same thing (seeing a vet instead of a GI) when we discovered that one of my mom's (many cats) had IBS, we took it to the vet and they gave it a shot and that was the end of it's IBS. Why it can't be that simple for humans is beyond me.
