Hi everyone! This My first post. Im a 45 year old male. Ive been diagnosed with UC for a little over three years. Current med is Asacol HD. Its driving me crazy with all the gas it gives me after every meal. Has anyone here have the same side effect?
Besides all the other crap it gives you, the one that really bothers me is this gas.
Help!!

The low FODMAP diet is very good at reducing gas. Give it a try for a few days:

Welcome, Tito!
I took Asacol for a long time, and I didn't experience gas. That does not mean that it wouldn't give you gas, though. We all respond differently to these meds.
I did however start developing horrible gas and gas pains a few years ago, and discovered that I was suddenly lactose intolerant! I had milk my whole life and it never affected me until now. Is it possible it could be related to something besides the meds?

honestly, my only symptom has been gas for a while. i think it was the member, tornado, who has had success with a low fodmap diet so i looked into it more. my nutritionist asked me to follow it last year during a flare but nothing helped then. i tried it a few days ago and i found my main problem. RAW GARLIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i usually eat 5 cloves a day because i love it but the past few days i cut it out just because i didn't have time to eat it. seriously, i'm like a new person.
so yeah, look at the list pluot posted. there is definitely something to it.

Haha, banana you totally eat the craziest stuff!
Bacon fat balls, 5 cloves of garlic daily, ummm.. I can't think of the others off the top of my head but it's just to funny. Every now and then I catch a post and do a double read...

I get gassy from my rectal meds, but not from the oral asacol. If it were the meds wouldn't it be all day and not just after meals? Maybe it is something you're eating. I'm also aware of low fodmaps and agree there's benefit to following it. Many of my triggers are high fodmap.

Sorry To hear that Soy! Thanks Plout n JJ! I hear ya Bananagirl! It's really the only thing that I get. I think I'll give that FODMAP diet a try...probably write down every little crap I eat and see what really gasses me up? Last night and today's really bad...today I ate lettuce for lunch, for dinner as well, one with chicken and the other with tuna, and had half of a turkey sandwich on rye.
I'll be back reporting on how it went. If anybody else comes up with something, please let me know...my wife will greatly appreciate it! She thinks I'm doing it (passing) on purpose!!!

yeah, it's hard when people think you can "control" your farts when you really can't. it hurts to hold it in and feels better to get it out. i sometimes think of myself as a walking fart!
look at the list and just see the most common offenders in your diet. i know mine is garlic and onions because i eat them all the time. i should try cutting out onions but i use them in a lot of stews and broths because they add so much body and flavor.
