Just started prednisone, anything I should look out for?

I just got home from spending the entire day in emerge due to relentless bloody diarrhea. They gave me a dose of prednisone through IV and sent me packing with a script for a tapering dose...8 pills x4days, 7, 6 and so on. I heard some bad things about it and just want to know if it actually helps and if the good out weighs the bad? I know everyone's experience is different but I already feel a little weird, like losing my train of thought, a weird taste in my mouth, flubbing up a lot of words...maybe this is all in my head? I also think I may have cdiff back again but won't find out for 48 hours....I hope to god I don't! That cdiff is a stubborn sob!!

Pred can be very helpful and it can provide quick results. The big problem is when you can't taper off of it and you end up on a much longer course than you anticipated. I wouldn't worry about that right now, just focus on getting healthy, worry about getting off pred after you've healed a bit. I hope you're not dealing with c diff too.

People here don't like pred because everyone gets random and temporary side effect from it (e.g., acne, insomnia, bursts of energy, increased appetite that can lead to weight gain, makes you more emotional or aggressive, moonface, etc). That said, pred can work wonders to stop bleeding and get your uc symptoms quickly under control, which is why we're prescribed it in the first place.

Many here recommend/swear by the steroid based enemas instead of pred as they tend to have less of the nasty side effects.

I am with Canada Mark. I love pred. Never had any side effects and felt great on it. You might get lucky and feel great!! Put me back into remission fast and helped me gain some much needed weight back.
