These past 6 months have been hell! First got Pityrasis Rosacea, that sort of cleared, my father passed away (in January) and then a good friends grandfather passed, got a wicked sinus infection, two weeks after that got a cold, then strained my foot last week (that I had a bunionectomy on) went into urgent care for a Toradol shot because I almost couldn't walk due to the swelling and pain, then developed Costochondritis (inflammation of the cartilage of the ribs) from my residual coughing 2 days ago and then today got a root canal so my jaw is aching something fierce!

Surprisingly, my Uc has been good thru out this whole thing. Bonus, I am getting my Remicade on Monday. :)

But I am waving the white flag....I give! mad

Hi Red, I have a question for you....

I see a lot of "unable to tolerate Mesalamines" here.

Can I ask why?...what happens? I know some people confuse 'allergic' reactions with just a negative response, but what happens to you or others when they say unable to tolerate?

Sherry, you've surely used up your decade's worth of bad karma by now, so the rest of the 2010's should be smooth sailing. Glad at least the UC is behaving.

Scott, my intolerance consists of vastly increased symptoms - more D, more bleeding, more pain, more gas, more everything. It only happens with mesalamine for me, either oral or rectal. I can take Balsalazide and tolerate it. This is a well-documented and relatively common reaction, but it's considered due to local irritation of the mucosa rather than an allergic process.

Thanks momto2boys and Judy...now that my bad luck is used up for the year, I too hope that this is the end of it! :)

Scott, just like Judy, most mesalamines increased everything 3 fold. But they also make me feel like I have the flu. I was on Asacol for years before I started developing my intolerance - I also found out that I can't do Rowasa's either. So my doc switched me to Colazal and I did fine on that for many years with the occasional Colocorts - however that never put me into remission (plus I started to get the intolerance to that as well) so I went on 6mp. When that combo failed me, my doc put me on Remicade (which put me in remission) but wanted to maintain remission with Apriso (in addition to the Remicade). My insurance wouldn't cover Apriso until I tried Pentasa. Pentasa about near killed me. Within 24 hours of my first dose, I was running to the bathroom with explosive D at least 15 times a day with SEVERE abdominal pains. Finally my insurance approved Apriso. So far *knock on wood*, I've not had any bad reaction to it.

My only true allergy to a Uc med is sulfasalazine. I break out into massive hives and welts when I take Sulfa.

Interesting, I thought all 5-ASA were pretty much the same.

Azulfadine gave me Stevens-Johnmson syndrome....very rare syndrome that runs in my family, my Dad gets in from Clindamycin.

It's sure been a hell year for you, but it's awesome that your UC has done remarkably well considering all the crap you've gone through. The Remi is certainly a huge A+.

Hope that the white flag wave will create that long needed break!

How's your tooth doing? When you have that type of work, were you put on a Z-pack?

I used to think bad things only came in threes, but not anymore....glad your UC didn't flare, and I hope your tooth settles down soon!

Yick, I hope your jaw gets better quickly. Mine hurt for 3 days after. My jaw is in awful shape. It's so uncomfortable. Feel better :)

Thanks guys....yes please if any of you have lucky charms please send them my way! :)

My tooth is fine now and it's actually nice to be able to drink cold things or even breathe without the nerve pain. My jaw still hurts a little, where they gave me the shots but it's going away. And no Q, no antibiotics.

Good to hear your new tooth isn't giving you grief. So, you have the new crown as well? or a temp at this point?

wow that really sucks. i feel your pain though i got root canal on monday. it was so nice to have all the pain going away!!

Q, actually I already have a crown on that tooth. The dentist drilled thru the crown to get to the root. I go in next Wednesday to have the post put in and to have it permanently filled.

Another little twist of fate. I get a called from my GI's nurse today and she said my authorization for my Remi was declined because my primary needs to put it in. My original PCP is the one who did the very first authorization but she left the office so I got assigned to a PCP within the same office. So now I'm not even sure if I will be getting my Remi on Monday or if I have to wait....gggrrrrr!

Red, call your insurance and explain this to them. Sometimes they are a little dumb. My problem with my insurance was, when my mother was alive 2 years ago, I had 2 types of insurances: one from my dad's work and my mother's. Once my mother passed away, I told them this and verified with her DOD and they still caused me some problems 1.5 years later!

I know life probably sucks for you right now, but, the way I see it when it happens to me, is that this is all a test for you. The most high, life, whomever you feel to put in that place, feels that you are strong enough to handle what it throws at you— and so it does, it throws a challenge(s) your way to test you! :)

Sherry....didn't know/realise that a root canal could be one ON an already crowned tooth.....very cool to know (just in case I ever need one!!! ).

Hope you have a better week after the Remi treatment authorisation gets straightened out. OMG....it's true RED tape..lol.

I am going to call tomorrow morning to see if it's been authorized. But calling my insurance company is useless. My docs are the ones who has to do all the work, which I don't mind really because they're really good about fighting for their patients.

Q, I didn't know they could do that either.

I had to go to the ER today. My ribs have been very sore but last night they were excruciating. I barely got any sleep because I was getting sharp shooting pains in my right ribs that wrapped around to the back. Then I woke up this morning and I could barely moved my right arm because the shoulder is killing me. The ER doc took some X-rays and did an EKG....no broken ribs, no pneumonia and heart is great. So she ruled it as a rib muscle strain with spasms. Gave me morphine and Valium. Barely touched the pain. I was sent home with Norco, Zofran and Valium.

Oh that's strange, whenever the insurance gave us problems, my mom would call and they would fix it right away. We had Cigna and currently have Blue Cross Blue Shield. I hope it can get sorted out.

The rib pain sounds like Costochondritis. I have it too and sometimes it makes me immobile. I have trouble moving, getting up, sleeping flat, sometimes breathing. It's annoying too when I can feel the inflammation by touching me ribs.

So sorry you are having such troubles :(

I thought prednisone can also be given for coctochondritis. I have had that in the past as well and it seemed to last forever but mine did not get as severe as yours. My doctor told me to take ibuprofen, but that was prior to my UC diagnosis. Maybe you could also try ice for the inflammation. I hope you have a better night tonight!

I can truly relate to the rib/upper back/shoulder/arm pain...I'm going through it now (but not like you are!). I believe mine is related to spasm in my neck and upper back. It is on the same side as I had lung surgery, which sometimes follows the incision line...this time it clearly hurts when I breathe in and out. Been to the chiro twice last week and will do another this week.



Good you had x-rays/testing done at the ER....and I hope the combo of meds helps to relieve your pain/inflammation.

What are the tests for costochondritis by the way....

I'm wondering that since you're close to your Remi time, if that has something to do with the related pain?

It can, but it's a temporary fix for inflammation if stopped too soon, just like for UC.

So an update: the thing with the insurance is they wanted a global referral...meaning they wanted a referral from my primary that authorizes my GI to order the Remi. I got it all taken care of this morning. Got to the hospital and then they didn't even have my doctors orders! But luckily they got them fairly quickly and I got my Remi today...yay!

And yes I do have a feeling that the increased rib pain was because my Remi was running out of my system. I do have Peripheral arthritis. So maybe it was a combination of the lessening Remi AND a pulled rib muscle. Today my ribs and shoulders are still sore but not nearly as bad as it was yesterday.

Also good news, I got squeezed in to see my primary on Wednesday for my foot. So things are looking up.
