I'll spare you all from the long story here about how my cousin I live with got started other than a relative helped him out one evening when he had a bad flare-up and had no rest rooms available to get to. So my relative had some medication she was taking called Oxycontin, and with 30 minutes or more the flare-up completely went away. And the next few days while we were away from home he would take a pill of Oxycontin before he'd leave for the day. And not a single symptom occured, and he was even able to eat anything he wanted without any symptoms stirring up.

Soon after he lost his job and also his insurance. He had been taking Remicade infusions for many years, but due to the high amount of money it cost, he wasn't able to go after 2 months as he's scheduled to take every 2 months. It's going on 7 months since his last Remicade Infusion and he's not had a single flare-up or any symptom of my Ulcerative Colitis. I assume he's in remission, which after taking Remicade for close to 10 years now, he's never reached remission. So thanks to taking Oxycontin everyday, he's able to stay in remission.

Has anyone else tried this? I know taking Oxycontin without it being prescribed to you is illegal.. so I wonder if any doctor would start prescribing it due to how well it's helping? I told him I'd help him hopefully find answers, so thank you in advance for reading this.

Maybe oxycontin is helping because it's an opiate that slows the bowel process. Has your cousin been scoped recently? I would doubt that his inflammation is gone even if his diarrhea is.

Like kazbern said, oxycontin is an opiate, a narcotic. Very illegal for the person with the prescription to give those to anyone. They are dangerously addictive. If a doc prescribed them to the person taking them and they help, great. Just be careful! :)

That isn't going to really help in the long run, but I know how great it can be to get relief... even if it's superficial.

The opiates do slow our systems down, but it's much more of a mask to our symptoms than a way to heal.

Not trying to be a downer, just seems the way it is from all I've read/learned/experienced! My GI doctor will not prescribe any painkiller due to liability worries.

The research I've found is that the longer a person is on Remicade, the greater the chance of having colon cancer is greatly increased. So if getting off of Remicade is possible, it sounds like the route to take. Maybe I'm wrong. My cousin is aware of the addictiveness but is somewhat prepared from his dealings with Prednisone which forces a tapering off method. It does sound from what everyone is saying that no doctors will prescribe an opiate for that reasoning.

I have had UC for 14 years and I have daily chronic pain in my guts and joints. I have scar tissue in the colon which has created narrowing of the bowel. In the last year - the joint pain started... I have been on hydrocodone for over a year \now and it does help slow down the BM movements and pain. The Hydrocodone will not help with healing but it does help with symptoms. My 2-cents of advice - You really need to shop around for the right GI doctor if he\she will not handle the full circle of symptoms you are experiencing from UC. Do NOT take illegal meds... Get a prescription... :)

Been out of remission for over a year and was in hospital for 9 days last year. Good Luck and God Bless...

Opiates used to be used to slow down gastro activity for UC/CD, but with it can possibly come other problems...especially if inflammation isn't being taken care of.

Being on OxyContin is the most irresponsible thing ever if it was not prescribed....especially for UC.

Good lord...this is one of the most highly addictive drugs out there, and all it is doing is masking the pain, slowing down the bowel, and doing absolutely nothing but covering up the symptoms. It is doing nothing for the disease. Aside from now creating an addict and risking toxic megacolon, it is also a felony to be diverting it to anyone.

He is not in remission, I guarantee that. He is risking everything by not being on any medicines that control the UC and it's inflammation.

Also, where did you get the fact that the longer a person is on Remicade the greater your chance of colon cancer is?!?!???? All of these medicines DECREASE your chance of cancer.

this is NOT a medicine that puts people into remission.....it is risking everything for him.

yeah, that's harsh, sorry, but someone has to say it.....I apologize for being this way.
