Hi,
I'll start with the long story and I'm hoping someone has had a similar experience and might be able to shed some light.

Went to A&E on Thursday the 17th with severe, right sided and lower abdominal pain and vomiting. X-ray showed a slight blockage in my bowel, diagnosed as constipation even though I was regularly going. Advised to take laxatives which I did to no effect.

On Sunday 20th was taken to hospital after being in agony through the night. Due to previous history of ovarian cysts, was admitted to gynae ward and given an internal ultrasound which was clear. Stayed in hospital to control the pain for 2 nights. Discharged on the Tuesday evening.

Saw my GP due to still being in pain on the Wednesday who phoned the hospital who said to get down there straight away. Was admitted to the surgical assessment ward with plans for an upper abdominal ultrasound the next day. Doctor tried to discharge me without doing the scan but the lovely nurses snuck me up to ultrasound anyway. It was clear so they suggested taking omeprazole to see if the pain was caused by excess acid eating away at my stomach?

At this moment, I am still in constant horrendous pain but a phone call from hospital says that they still think I have constipation. I'm not sure I agree with this diagnosis at all as I have had diarrhoea which is the complete opposite! I am currently taking constant pain killers just to try and control the pain and have been told by hospital that the only thing they are doing is making me an appointment with a gastro doctor for in 6 weeks! So I presume that unless the pain sorts itself, I will be in agony for the next 6 weeks? The lady I spoke to at the hospital has said that due to my age (24) they do not want to keep exposing me to scans and x-rays whilst trying to diagnose the cause.

Has anyone had a similar experience with a diagnosis at the end? I am so frustrated and at the end of my tether, I don't want to go back to hospital just to be discharged with painkillers.

I would call the office I was scheduled for and tell them the situation. Let them know you want an appointment asap if someone cancels and are willing to come in at any time.

Severe constipation can cause a fecal impaction, an accumulation of dry stool that blocks the colon. Around this impaction, it is common for liquid stool to pass and cause diarrhea.

If you can't get into the GI sooner, call your PCP and try to be seen there. They can order further studies such as upper and lower GI studies with contrast, which would locate and identify the blockage if it is there.

Thank you for your quick responses.

I have an appointment with my GP (I'm from the UK) this afternoon for a prescription of painkillers and omeprazole. I will discuss it further with him as I can't do six weeks in this sort of pain!
I've had minor right sided abdominal pain for nearly six years that has been diagnosed (in order) as a cyst on my right ovary that I had drained, then another cyst on the right ovary that I had removed, then appendicitis and now this! I'm just hoping for a diagnosis sooner rather than later so I can control it.

Hi...seems remiss to have you prescribed with painkillers that could cause you further constipation and possible further erosion of your stomach (if that's what they might suspect).

Did you have your ovary removed?

Hopefully you'll be set up with scopes for the upper and lower gastro tract..and an abdominal MRI.

In hospital I was on morphine as it's the only pain med so far that's managed to touch the pain. Due to it's constipation causing properties they took me off that after a day and put me back onto paracetamol and 400mg ibuprofen. They don't seem to really have any definite ideas about the cause other than constipation. There seems to be a lot of guesswork going on and as they are unwilling to do an much more investigation it will be a process of elimination.

I didn't have the ovary removed, just the cyst.

Have been to see my GP who seems to be a lot more on the ball and is arranging for tests to see if I have chrohns/diverticulitus/ulcerative colitis or something similar. Hopefully i'll have some answers soon!

Signed off work for another 7 days (which they are NOT happy about! I think that's my chances of promotion stunted for a while) Have now had stool samples taken after having diarrhoea for 5 days. Getting results on Thursday so hopefully some answers finally!

sounds like all those meds to mask the cyst pain.....have worn away and messed up your stomach

The ultrasound of my ovaries was clear of a cyst. You think the pain I'm getting at the moment could be left over from the cysts? That's bad news because they probably couldn't do anything about it :(
