Proctitis Help

I had rectal bleeding and dishcharge for a period of 4months with canker sores and some soft stool. I was sent for a colonoscopy and told I had chronic proctitis and inflamation in my colon. biopsies were normal. I saw a gastro doc who put me on 5ASA and my symptoms went away and 5 months later he sent me for another colonoscpy, bioposiy results indicated no pathological abnormalities. So now i'm confused, does that mean I dont know proctitis anymore or no disease was found and my proctitis is just in a non flare up stage?

He took me off the 5ASA post colonoscopy and just yesterday, a week and a half later I had my first soft stool with blood and mucus again.

If you have Proctitis, then it is a form of UC. UC is an autoimmune system disorder that never goes away (basically, your immune system attacks your large intestine which causes symptoms such as bleeding, diarrhea, urgency, pain, etc.). Your medications relieve your UC symptoms. So you never want to stop taking your meds no matter how good you feel. If you had normal biopsies then that's a good thing. It means you are in remission (meaning an absence of symptoms) which is a very good thing. So, yes, take your meds and keep taking them indefinitely. Having a daily maintenance medication with uc is a necessity.

5asa suppository, why did doc tell me to stop taking them after colonoscopy? Does he think I was misdiagnosed

I keep reading that standard protocol for first episode of proctitis is to treat with suppository until remission is achieved, then stop. Apparently some people go years in remission without meds. Others, it comes back immediately. Now, I don't agree with this method, but it seems that's what their teaching doctors to do!

Yes. Someone just posted recently that they got proctitus under control, quit meds and developed full blown pancolitis. They aren't uncommon. It is my belief that, in most cases, proctitus is just the starting area of UC and that, again in most cases, if not treated it will develop into a much larger area. In that case it would be kind of stupid to get proctitus, treat it as proctitus only, go into remission, and quit meds altogether. Proctitus is IBD is UC and it is a chronic lifelong autoimmune disease so, at the very least, proctitus in remission without treatment is almost assuredly going to come back as at least proctitus again, if not more. Some people may get lucky that they can clear up proctitus, get it again, and immediately treat it again so it does not spread to a larger area, constantly keeping it at bay again and again and again. But, many people, if they do not jump on it quickly enough, are going to see it evolve past just being proctitus. It is my personal opinion that you need to continually treat all forms of IBD, including proctitus, even when it is in remission.
