How to gain weight for vegetarian during flare?

So i am still in flare and on prednisone 60mg, 4 lialda and metronidazole bcs my stool test back positive for c.diff. After starting metronidazole i am feeling better and bleeding has reduced sometimes stopped but i still have diarrhea and cant eat much. I feel full after eating a small bowl of boiled white rice and lentil soup. I started eating rice krispie cereal and almond milk for breakfast today. I can eat eggs but i am scared that it will make me bleed so i am not eating eggs. I have dropped from 146 lbs to 110 lbs today. And i am vegetarian so there is not much choice to eat during flare. Any suggestions to gain weight? Or what to eat?

avocado. sweet potatoes (although maybe too much fiber). white potatoes. cooked fruit.

Hi YoungmanUC,

I'm sorry you are struggling. Do you like coconut? I would try full fat coconut milk and use it to make homemade non-dairy yogurt, soups, etc. The Natural Value brand has no added guar gum (which can be hard on the gut and is best avoided). Also, I would drizzle olive or coconut oil on your meals. I drizzle olive oil on green beans and drizzle coconut oil on butternut and acorn squash. Do you like avocado? They are nutritious and calorie dense.

Yes i do like avacado but how do i integrated it into food? Just eat it raw? Or cooked into something?

I just eat it with a spoon. Can't beat it! You can also mash it up and make sauces, or put it in smoothies....

If you can do dairy... I suggest full fat dairy. Great vegetarian way to keep getting calories and fat. If not organic, Daisy brand is all natural sour cream and cottage cheese.
and I LOVE eggs... they are a go to flare food for me.
cheese is full of good things too!

avocado is quite fibrous. I liked it with rice.

Watch your almond milk... MANY brands have Carageenen in them and I found that to irritate my guts. Which sucked cuz it was one more way for me to get fat/nutrients in.

For just straight vegetarian... if you aren't lactose... full fat dairy seems to be the low fiber way to go to me :) :)

No, not off the top of my head. I'm sure it's on some of my blood work results. I'd go hunt them out but we've just finished moving house a few weeks ago and we still have boxes everywhere.

it is unlikely you will gain any weight until you get your flare under control and i'm sure the cdiff is making it even worse. i could eat 3000 calories a day but if i'm going more than 5x, i won't gain anything.

since you have the runs, i'd do resistant starches ASAP- cold potatoes, rice, tapioca pudding, sweet potatoes/yams, or soaked beans. eat some concentrated fats like coconut oil, butter, olive oil, and dairy if you can. i love dry curd cheese during flares.

I agree with embersglow1 about the almond milk. So many of the store bought brands have carrageenan and other icky additives. If you enjoy almond milk, it's easy to make yourself. All you need is a food processor and a nut milk bag. I blend 1 c. blanched almond flour with 2 cups water in the food processor for two minutes. I add a few drops of vanilla extract and a teaspoon or two of honey because I like mine sweetened. Then I just hook the nut milk bag onto the lip of a mixing bowl. Pour in the blended almond mixture and squeeze the bag contents until you are left with just almond milk. It tastes so much better when you make it yourself too!

I just checked. The silk brand i am using doesnot have carrageenan listed as an ingredient. So its good.!!

I'm a vegan and eat a lot of nut butters. Peanut, sunflower, almond. One of my favorite snacks is a mix of really creamy peanut butter, unsweetened apple sauce and cinnamon.
