Wonder why these biofilms are in normal people.

Do we with UC have more.

Many here are trying to attack biofilms, perhaps not a real good idea.

 They just come out with some info that people with IBD/UC are more prone to heart attack.

Glucocorticoids being steroids.

Inflammation is the devil in our bodies causing UC as well as heart problems.
I believe the article said the risk was greater for newly-diagnosed IBD people but that all IBD people had increased risk of heart failure.

I have been in dire straits in the past but never hospitalized for UC. Because I always looked pretty healthy my doctors never believed how really awful my life and my symptoms were and hence never rx'd me steroids except for a brief time I was on Entocort.

Maybe that was a good thing but it didn't feel so good at the time.

The article about breaking up biofilms (being possibly a bad idea) was interesting and logical. darned if you don't and darned if you do.

That's very interesting.

I know people talk of attacking their biofilms but I wonder if there is ever any proof that biofilms do get dissolved with the types of strategy used. Surely you'd need biopsies before and after? The only time I've read about biofilms being studied it is in biopsies?

Huh - that was super interesting. Imagine bacteria actually imaged in heart disease.

What I also find interesting is that some antibiotic's seem to increase the risk of heart attack and future heart disease.

Huh - Maybe it's only one or two specific antibiotics. My mom has a heart murmur or palpitation or something along those lines and needed to have dental surgery. The dentist was quite concerned about giving her antibiotics before hand and mentioned to her the increased risk so she had dental surgery at a special office to deal with these kinds of patients. None the less she said the care she received was beyond top notch and far better than any hospital she had been to.

Perhaps the concern was specific to what she was taking for an unrelated condition or something. Didn't really get the full story.

Our gut bugs produce vitamin k2, which is important for decalcifying the heart and other organs in the body. Antibiotics don't differentiate and kill these gut bugs, and rather efficiently at that. Go figure why antibiotic use is linked to organ failure and damage. The recent Harvard study on fluoroquinolone antibiotics and how they branch out the mitochondria should be an indicator of that. In the words of Joel Salatin, an adored farmer, "this ain't normal folks".

Oh and by the way, they keep updating the warnings each year for FQ antibiotics. Here's the latest one. Screw all the people that perpetuate this bull****.

15 years ago one pill of Cipro, a flouroquinolone, put me on the floor of my bathroom all night, throwing up and constant diarrhea. Pure hell. Idiot doctor gave it to me for a deep splinter he was afraid of infection (none showing).

I have wondered whether Cipro plus dental antibiotics were the root cause of my UC. I have stopped taking dental antibiotics because my very, very faint heart murmur is less problematic than my very real UC. I will take antibiotics when needed but never Cipro again.

sure, antibiotics may have been the trigger for your uc, but not the cause. and i'm with you on cipro, i avoid it as it makes me feel worse than other antibiotics.

Sounds like your body reacted the right way, IMO. Consider yourself lucky. A relative of mine thought his shoulder was going to pop off after taking avelox for a "sinus infection" (there was obviously no infection -- just a blanket diagnosis, and then a prescription thrown at him).

He needed to be taken to the hospital and was administered morphine. Did I mention I much I hate doctors? Scum of the earth if you ask me. skull

Antibiotics could be an indirect cause of UC, as they severely derange the balance of intestinal microbiota. This would fit with the observation that UC often follows treatment with broad spectrum antibiotics, though that of course is not proof of causation. The question is unresolved, but its clear that antibiotics are not good for your general health (however they are clearly essential if you are about to be killed by a pathogen).
